Pedro Martins has built a path in the scientific community, beginning with his degree in Applied Biology in 2008, advancing through a Master's in Micro and Nanotechnology in 2011, and culminating in a PhD in Sciences (specialising in Physics) in 2018, all from the University of Minho, Portugal. His PhD research, titled "New generation of photocatalytic nanocomposites: production, characterisation, and environmental application", laid the foundation for his subsequent endeavours in materials science, mainly focusing on platforms for environmental applications. Between 2019 and 2020, as a post-doc, Pedro participated in projects like "Multiplex point-of-care device for lung disease biomarkers in sputum" and "MicroTreat - Biomimetic microenvironment for the study and development of targeted therapies in haematological malignancies", showcasing his multidisciplinary background and approach, also allowing to acquire further expertise and competencies in the biomedical applications area. In May 2021, Pedro Martins was awarded a contract as a Junior Researcher and integrated CBMA. He is now developing 3D printing natural/synthetic polymeric multifunctional membranes to remove and monitor persistent contaminants (e.g., antibiotics, PFAs, arsenic) in water matrices, employing 3D printing technologies, green chemistry, and ecotoxicity assessment to fulfil a sustainable and circular economy paradigm. Pedro's scientific journey took him through several prestigious institutions, where he expanded his research scope and established significant collaborations. Notably, his scientific stays at TU Dresden (Germany), Basque Centre on Materials, Applications and Nanostructures (Bilbao, Spain) and the Institute of Nanoscience of Aragon (Zaragoza - Spain), alongside productive collaborations with the Unité de Développement des équipements Solaires (Algeria), University of the Basque Country (Spain), and the International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory (Portugal), and Fraunhofer (Germany) have enriched his research portfolio and international standing. Pedro's academic contributions include 6 invited talks, around a total of 40 oral and poster presentations at national and international conferences, and over 50 publications, with significant works in top-tier journals like Chemical Reviews, Advanced Functional Materials, and Hazardous Materials demonstrating his profound impact on materials science and environmental remediation. His involvement as a guest editor for journals like Polymers and Frontiers in Chemistry further underlines his expertise and respected voice in the scientific community. In recognition of his outstanding contributions, Pedro has been awarded competitive projects, including a notable EU-Marie Currie project focused on "Advanced manufacturing of self-sensing bio-based membranes for environmental detoxification and revalorisation" and " Remediation and sensing solutions for persistent pollutants decontamination" in an FCT Bilateral Cooperation program between Portugal and Germany. These projects reflect his commitment to solving pressing environmental issues and highlight his leadership/independence in the field. Pedro's dedication to education and mentorship is evident; since 22/23, he was integrated into the Graduation in Applied Biology and the master's degree in Biophysics and Bionanosystems. Additionally, he has an active role in supervising PhD (3) and Master's students (5), as well as participating as a Jury of national and international PhD degrees (5). His leadership extends beyond research, as seen in his position on the Scientific Council at the Institute of Science and Innovation for Bio-sustainability (IB-S), where he has been responsible for the operational management of the Multifunctional Materials Laboratory since 2017. Pedro Martins's career demonstrates his persistent quest for knowledge, innovation, and the application of science for real societal problems, contributing to progress.
