Rafaela A. Santos obtained her PhD in Biology at CIIMAR- Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental, Universidade do Porto, where she applied different microbiology, cellular and molecular biology, and biochemical tools in the full characterization of Bacillus species and their biotechnological applications as disease-preventive agents for the aquaculture sector. Currently, she is a Junior Researcher at CIIMAR dedicated to the development of novel strategies to fight diseases in aquaculture, including probiotics, postbiotics and vaccines. Rafaela has 9 years of lab practical experience in academic settings with strong connections with the animal-feeds industries, counting 1 LICENSING AGREEMENT and 6 KNOWLEDGE-TRANSFER and science-based business ignition programs. Rafaela's RESEARCH ACTIVITIES RESUME: i) isolation and characterization of bacteria with important probiotic properties, including the production of antimicrobial, anti-biofilm, Quorum-Quenching and immunostimulatory compounds; ii) development of novel oral vaccination for the aquaculture sector; iii) purification and characterization of bioactive compounds and their ORAL administration to prevent aquaculture bacterial outbreaks; iv) functional analysis of bacterial genomes, with characterization of genes (gene expression analysis); v) characterization of the bioactive potential and antioxidant properties of industrial by-products and algae. Rafaela's MAIN SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INDICATORS: i) Participation in 7 R&D projects (4 FCT, 1 CIIMAR, 3 BIP); ii) PI of 2 projects (1 exploratory project financed by CIIMAR and 1 project financed by a business development program-BIP-Proof ); iii) 20 PUBLICATIONS in peer-review journals, of which 4 as first author (19 Q1, 3 corresponding).
