With a PhD in Biomedical Sciences and over 15 years of research experience in Virology, Microbiology and Cell Biology, Sílvia Vale-Costa currently leads her independent research line as Assistant Researcher at i3S institute. Her main scientific interest is to understand how lung cells repair their membrane upon damage by respiratory pathogens in the context of pneumonia. She is the principal investigator of a FCT grant, was a recipient of COMULIS grant, and participated as team member in 3 other research grants (FCT, ERC). She has authored 16 original articles and 2 invited reviews in prestigious journals like Nature Communications, PLoS Biology, JCB and eLife. She was the first to implement in Portugal the cutting-edge technique Correlative Light and Electron Microscopy, which has served to solve various scientific questions of distinct biology fields. Over the years, she trained 18 students, presented her work at 19 meetings, and participated in 13 outreach events. She is regularly invited to act as examiner in MSc theses, to teach in postgraduate courses, and to review for respected journals such as Virology and Frontiers in Immunology. Her work was acknowledged with a full Public Health Prize Dr Ricardo Jorge and a Honourable Mention, both awarded by the government’s research institute (INSA). These achievements reflect the recognition of her research, expertise and leadership potential by her peers.
