Assunção is an integrated researcher at ICNOVA - Nova Institute of Communication (iNOVA Media Lab) and a collaborating researcher at LIACOM - Laboratory of Applied Research in Communication and Media, in the field of journalism and media studies with a specific focus on the intersection of new digital visual texts and their role in creating information about social justice and environmental conservation for online journalism. This involves exploring innovative ways to communicate complex issues and engage audiences through visual storytelling on digital platforms using various visual mediums such as infographics, multimodal narratives, animated GIFs, reels, stories, and memes to convey information, evoke emotions, and promote awareness and understanding of critical issues. PhD in Digital Media (January 2023) from the Universidade Nova de Lisboa (join programme with University of Porto, in collaboration with the University of Texas at Austin), Assunção also holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the same institution and a degree in Design from Universidade de Lisboa - Faculdade de Arquitectura. At the beginning of her career she worked as a journalist specialised in IT and later on as a graphic designer developing visual solutions on corporate ID, advertising and marketing communication for private and public clients. Currently, her research seeks to integrate graphic design and contemporary art digital methodologies into visual journalism practices acknowledging the evolving landscape of digital media consumption and the importance of bringing a more visually compelling and innovative dimension to journalistic content that resonate with today's audiences. The aim is to understand how to effectively convey information, foster engagement, and maintain credibility in the digital environment by identifying best practices in the production of visual journalistic content. Since 2022 Assunção has been teaching at the Escola Superior de Comunicação Social de Lisboa – Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, first as an Invited Assistant and now as an Invited Adjunct Teacher, where she teaches curricular units in the area of image and visual languages in journalism and advertising/marketing degrees. Assunção is also an Invited Assistant Professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa in the master's degree New Media and Web Practices since 2023.
