Felisa Rey holds a degree in Marine Sciences from the University of Vigo, Spain, and an MSc in Marine Resources from the University of Porto, Portugal, and the University of Santiago de Compostela, Spain. In 2016, she earned her PhD in Marine Sciences and the Environment from the University of Aveiro, Portugal. Her doctoral research focused on understanding the significance of maternal investment and the larval life of marine invertebrates with bi-phasic life cycles, exploring their impact on early life phenotypes, survival, and recruitment. In 2017, she received a Post-Doctoral fellowship from the Fundação Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT), Portugal. In 2019, following a competitive international competition (Individual Call to Scientific Employment Stimulus, CEEC-Individual call), she secured a researcher position at the University of Aveiro to investigate the process of endosymbiosis in sacoglossan sea slugs. Felisa has authored 38 original papers in peer-reviewed journals (15 as First Author, 3 as Last Author, and 14 as Corresponding Author) and contributed to two invited book chapters (Elsevier). She was the first author of Chapter 10 in the "Bioactive Lipids" book (ISBN: 978-0-12-824043-4) and a co-author in Chapter 8 of the "Functional Ingredients from Algae for Foods and Nutraceuticals" book (ISBN: 9780323988193). She has actively participated as researcher in eight scientific projects related to marine sciences (two ongoing) and is a member of organizing and/or scientific committees for various scientific meetings, including "Lipids in the Ocean" and "Workshop of Lipidomics." With over 40 presentations at national and international scientific meetings, Felisa has showcased her research contributions. Felisa has supervised several BSc (7 finished, one Erasmus Student), MSc (3 finished, 3 ongoing), and PhD (1 ongoing) students, while also mentoring 7 PhD and 2 Master's students. She has served as a reviewer for more than 30 peer-reviewed indexed scientific journals, is an editorial board member of Scientific Reports, and was a guest editor for the special issue of "Antibiotics" titled "Antimicrobial Lipids from Plants and Marine Organisms" (ISSN 2079-6382). In 2022, Felisa was awarded a short-term scientific mission (STSM) grant within the scope of the Cost Action Epilipidnet, visiting the Cellular and Plant Physiology Laboratory (CNRS-CEA-INRAE, Université Grenoble Alpes, France). Additionally, she completed a STMS at the Medical University of Bialystok (Poland) as part of the International Academic Partnerships of a project involving omic tools funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA). She is a member of the technical commission CEN/TC 454 – Algae and algae-based products of the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), contributing to the development of standards for sampling methods and sample treatment of algae within working groups WG6: Product test methods and WG8: Sampling (Portuguese pivot of this WG). Since 2020, Felisa has been instructing two Biochemistry subjects at the Chemical Department of the University of Aveiro. In addition to teaching, she has actively contributed as a trainer in practical courses on LC-MS and Lipidomics for PhD students enrolled in the Doctoral Program in Biochemistry since 2019. Throughout her professional career, Felisa has collaborated on various educational projects, promoting citizen science communication in public and private institutions, such as AquariumGalicia, public entities (Concelho do Grove, Deputación de Pontevedra), and environmental consulting companies (Hidria: Ciencia, Ambiente y Desarrollo, S.L.). Her current research interests encompass marine lipids, solar-powered animals, mixotrophy, algae, and the biotechnological applications of marine organisms.

  1. A Influência dos Efeitos Maternais em Invertebrados Bentónicos Marinhos com Ciclos de Vida Bifásicos, com Ênfase nos Crustáceos Decápodes. A maioria dos invertebrados bentónicos marinhos desenvolve-se através de ciclos de vida complexos e bifásicos. Existem três momentos críticos no ciclo de vida destes organismos, que exercem uma grande influência no seu desenvolvimento: 1) investimento maternal na produção de oócitos, 2) eclosão e desenvolvimento larvar e 3) metamorfose. O sucesso de cada um destes processos vai condicionar de form. 2016.   2. A vida entre dois mundos - a metamorfose não apaga a história larvar de invertebrados marinhos com ciclos de vida bifásicos. O ciclo de vida da maioria dos invertebrados marinhos alterna entre o ambiente pelágico (na coluna de água) e bentónico (no fundo). As larvas desenvolvem-se no meio pelágico, enquanto os adultos ocupam o bentos, cabendo às formas larvares realizarem a interface entre estes dois ambientes. As condições a que as larvas estão sujeitas durante o desenvolvimento e nos momentos de interface, podem influ. 2016. 2019/07/19 - Atual Demonstration of the project HULK Marine environments represent a box of surprises where it is possible to find singular associations that inspire researchers. One of them is the combination of photosynthesis and animals, two apparently incompatible terms that merge in marine sea slugs. These animals are the only one known to retain functional chloroplasts from their algal food. These stolen chloroplasts (kleptoplasts) remain functional from different periods of time, from days to months, inside the animal cells, providing another source of energy.
