Felisa Rey holds a BSc in Marine Sciences from the University of Vigo (Spain) and an MSc in Marine Resources from the University of Porto (Portugal) and the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). She completed her PhD in Marine Sciences and the Environment at the University of Aveiro (Portugal) in 2016, fwhere her research focused on the role of lipids in maternal investment, embryogenesis, and early larval development of marine crustaceans. In 2017, she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), followed by a highly competitive FCT CEEC Junior Researcher position in 2019 at the University of Aveiro. During this appointment, she led the ExtraPhoto project, investigating endosymbiosis and lipid metabolism in sacoglossan sea slugs. She also participated in the Blue Bioeconomy Pact – Vertical Fish project until 2026. In 2025, she was awarded a competitive FCT CEEC Assistant Researcher position and currently leads the Omega-Sea-Food project at the University of Aveiro, focusing on marine lipidomics, seafood quality, traceability, and sustainable blue biotechnology. Her research combines lipidomics, mass spectrometry, marine biochemistry, and biotechnology to investigate the ecological and biotechnological roles of marine lipids. She has authored more than 50 peer-reviewed publications, including 20 as first author, 6 as last author, and 20 as corresponding author, as well as two Elsevier book chapters, one as lead author. She has participated in ten national and international research projects, with two currently ongoing. Felisa has extensive experience in research supervision, having supervised nine undergraduate students (including one Erasmus student), eight MSc students (including one in collaboration with industry), and one completed PhD student as principal supervisor, while currently supervising two PhD candidates, one as principal supervisor. She has also mentored numerous undergraduate, MSc, PhD, and postdoctoral researchers. She has disseminated her research extensively through 76 scientific communications, including oral and poster presentations and invited lectures at national and international conferences. Since 2019, she has served as an Editorial Board Member of Scientific Reports and has guest-edited four special issues. She is also an active peer reviewer for international journals. Her international collaborations include two funded short-term scientific missions to France and Poland in 2022. She is an active member of CEN/TC 454 and the Portuguese mirror committee CT211, contributing to the development of European standards for algae and algae-based products. She also serves on the Core Group of the EpiLipidNET Interest Group on Algae and Plants, promoting international collaboration in algal and plant lipidomics. At the University of Aveiro, she has taught undergraduate Biochemistry courses since 2020 and has delivered advanced training in LC–MS and lipidomics to PhD students since 2019. She has served on the organizing committees of 17 national and international scientific events. In 2024, she secured EuroMarine funding to organize the international foresight workshop OMALI | Omega Marine Lipids, held in 2025 at the University of Aveiro in collaboration with CIIMAR and CSIC. Felisa received the highest possible researcher performance evaluation (100% – Excellent) at the University of Aveiro. In 2024, she was also selected for the Supernovas Women2Invest Programme, organized by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT Food) and IE Business School, an international programme designed to promote venture capital and innovation leadership among women in STEM.

  1. A Influência dos Efeitos Maternais em Invertebrados Bentónicos Marinhos com Ciclos de Vida Bifásicos, com Ênfase nos Crustáceos Decápodes. A maioria dos invertebrados bentónicos marinhos desenvolve-se através de ciclos de vida complexos e bifásicos. Existem três momentos críticos no ciclo de vida destes organismos, que exercem uma grande influência no seu desenvolvimento: 1) investimento maternal na produção de oócitos, 2) eclosão e desenvolvimento larvar e 3) metamorfose. O sucesso de cada um destes processos vai condicionar de form. 2016.   2. A vida entre dois mundos - a metamorfose não apaga a história larvar de invertebrados marinhos com ciclos de vida bifásicos. O ciclo de vida da maioria dos invertebrados marinhos alterna entre o ambiente pelágico (na coluna de água) e bentónico (no fundo). As larvas desenvolvem-se no meio pelágico, enquanto os adultos ocupam o bentos, cabendo às formas larvares realizarem a interface entre estes dois ambientes. As condições a que as larvas estão sujeitas durante o desenvolvimento e nos momentos de interface, podem influ. 2016. 2019/07/19 - Atual Demonstration of the project HULK Marine environments represent a box of surprises where it is possible to find singular associations that inspire researchers. One of them is the combination of photosynthesis and animals, two apparently incompatible terms that merge in marine sea slugs. These animals are the only one known to retain functional chloroplasts from their algal food. These stolen chloroplasts (kleptoplasts) remain functional from different periods of time, from days to months, inside the animal cells, providing another source of energy.
