Daniela Ribeiro graduated in Biochemistry (University of Porto, Portugal) and obtained a PhD degree from the Wageningen University, The Netherlands. After two postdocs (Spain and Portugal), in 2015 she became the head of the Virus Host-Cell Interactions Laboratory at the Institute of Biomedicine (iBiMED), University of Aveiro (UA). She was awarded an Assistant Researcher position from 2019-2023 (CEEC-IND-2017), and currently holds a tenure-track Assistant Researcher position. She contributed to major advances in the knowledge of peroxisome biology (PMIDs: 29364559, 28325759, 35951481) and demonstrated that peroxisomes play a role on the malignant transformation in prostate cancer (PMIDs: 25639644, 33121137). Her team also studies the interplay between viruses and the host translation machinery (PMIDs: 32505636, 30857287, 37614818), the host protein phophatases (PDMI: 38267954), and have recently shown that influenza A virus propagation requires the activation of the UPR and the accumulation of insoluble protein aggregates (PDMI: 38405606). Daniela’s major achievements have, however, undoubtfully been related to the study of the interplay between viruses and peroxisomes. She has significantly contributed to highlight the importance of this organelle for the establishment of a robust cellular response against viral infections, demonstrating that two distinct viruses, the human cytomegalovirus (PMIDs: 35445031, 27181750) and the hepatitis C virus (PMID: 26865163), developed specific mechanisms to counteract the peroxisome-dependent antiviral response. Her recognition in the field is demonstrated by invitations to publish major reviews in the topic at Trends in Cell Biology (IF: 21.16; PMID: 34696946) and Physiological Reviews (#1 journal in Physiology, IF: 46.51; PDMI: 35951481) as well as to contribute with 3 chapters for the most cited and recommended book on peroxisome-related methodologies (PMIDs: 36952193, 36952192, 36952194). She has furthermore been invited to participate in an international clinical project on peroxisome biogenesis diseases, to collaborate with industry on the development of antiviral chemicals, and to vice-coordinate a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network application on Peroxisomes and Viruses. Daniela has a solid international network of collaborators, some of which co-supervise(d) 6 of her 10 current and past PhD students. Daniela currently leads a team of 6 PhD students (2 as co-supervisor), and 1 MSc student. In the past she has supervised 3 postdocs, 4 PhD students and 20 MSc students. Daniela obtained over €1.2M funding as Principal Investigator from national (FCT) and international (H2020) sources. She currently coordinates an European Project on virology and RNA biology. Daniela has published 30 manuscripts (17 as senior-author) in internationally recognised journals with impact factors ranging from 2 to 47 (5 to 23 as senior-author), with a total of 878 citations. She has also published 4 book chapters and 8 proceedings, presented 61 oral presentations (21 as invited speaker) and 88 poster presentations (57 as senior author) in national and international meetings. Daniela has edited several issues in international peer reviewed journals. She is very active on science dissemination for the general public, and in the last 3 years organized 6 important international meetings. She is the main lecturer of Virology (BSc in Biomedical Sciences), Scientific Writing and Communication (PhD program on Rehabilitation Sciences) and Scientific Communication in Biomedicine (PhD program in Biomedicine), at the UA. She is the vice-director of the PhD program in Biomedicine, the Coordinator of the Biosafety Committee from the Department of Medical Sciences (DCM), and the Coordinator of the Biosafety-level 2 Cell Culture Facility at the iBiMED. Daniela also belongs to the Council of the UA Graduate School and to the Scientific Councils of iBiMED and DCM.
