Eduardo Ascensão is a Research Fellow at the Centre for Geographical Studies-Institute of Geography and Planning (CEG-IGOT), University of Lisbon. An anthropologist and urban geographer, his research interests lie in informal housing, post-colonial urbanisms, infrastructure and architecture from both STS (Science and Technology Studies) and cultural geography perspectives, as well as in housing policies, migration and socio-natures in the city. He has published widely, including articles in top journals in geography and urban studies such as the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, City, Antipode, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies and Social & Cultural Geography as well as in Portuguese journals Análise Social, Etnográfica and Cidades, Comunidades e Territórios. He has published book chapters in important edited volumes Global Gentrifications, Handbook of Gentrification Studies and the Political Ecology of Austerity. His article ‘Following engineers and architects through slums’ (2013, Análise Social) was awarded the Bengt Turner Award 2012 for best article of the year by ENHR-European Network for Housing Research. Eduardo was co-PI in the FCT project ‘exPERts: Making Sense of Housing Expertise in the PER Housing Program’; the Carnegie Trust project ‘Radical gardening in a time of crisis: the arts of precarious cultivation’, developed with Franklin Ginn (University of Bristol); and the University of Lisbon’s Tropical College Exploratory Project ‘Understanding the socio-spatial impact of governance models on refugee camps and informal settlements’, developed with Cristina Henriques (FA-ULisboa). As PI, he developed and coordinated the multi-institution project ‘Inhabiting Siza: residents’ experience of Álvaro Siza’s architecture and micro-technologies’ (2021-2024). He is currently developing multi-sited research on intervention models in informal settlements, through ethnographic research in different informal settlements in Bissau, Macau, Rio de Janeiro and Lisbon. In parallel, Eduardo’s teaching experience at IGOT includes the undergraduate courses ‘Geographies of Africa’, ‘Cultural and Social Geography’ and ‘Urban Geography’ as well as the postgraduate ones ‘Urban Regeneration and Gentrification’, ‘Housing: Policies and Experiences’ and ‘Methodologies in Human Geography’. He has supervised or co-supervised eight master's students and three PhD students, on topics ranging from urban governance in Africa to land regularisation in informal settlements or urban fragmentation. In the near future, Eduardo plans to develop research on urban rewilding in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area and beyond.
