Ana Margarida Costa. I graduated from the University of Aveiro in September 2023 with a degree in Biomedical Engineering. The graduation project centered on photonic technologies for biomedical applications, with a particular focus on the optical characterization (attenuation) of alginate-based waveguides for effective radiation guidance. In the same scope, I completed a master's degree in July 2024 at the University of Aveiro. The focus of my final dissertation was the fabrication and optimization of the optical properties of luminescent and non-luminescent biomaterial-based waveguides to produce three-dimensional hydrogels by guiding light on such waveguides. In pursuit of furthering my education in this field, in January of 2024, I was granted a research fellowship at CICECO - Aveiro Institute of Materials under the “Integrated photonic neuronal probes towards neuromorphic computing (PHEASANT)” project, Ref. 2022.15735.CMU. The primary objective of this project was to develop flexible and biocompatible optical hydrogel-based waveguides designed to facilitate the delivery of light. This project was a joint initiative with the Carnegie Mellon Portugal program and was concluded in January of 2025. Currently, I am enrolled as a second year Ph.D. student in the Biomedical Engineering program at the University of Aveiro, since October 2024. My areas of interest include biomedical engineering with a focus on photonics, tissue engineering, and biomaterials. In March of 2025, I was granted a research fellowship under the scope of the project “Reborn - Full human-based multi-scale constructs with jammed regenerative pockets for bone engineering”, G.A. 883370, of the Chemistry Department/CICECO, during which I developed light-guided systems for implantable applications. I played a key role in a project integrating living microalgae into optical hydrogel waveguides to enable controlled photosynthesis under laser radiation, while monitoring intrinsic chlorophyll emission to assess both optical functionality and biological activity.
