Miguel Santos is a transdisciplinary artist and researcher. His practice considers intersecting perspectives in art and science to investigate notions of subjectivity and its relation with nature, which he explores in the formulation of installations, sculptures, videos and photographic works. In 2011, he was awarded a PhD in Fine Arts from Sheffield Hallam University for the research project: Poetics of the Interface: Creating Works of Art that Engage in Self-Reflection, which was considered among the best in the interaction of art and science in 2011/2 by a peer-review panel from the Leonard Abstract Service (MIT press). A strong interest in art and science collaborations resulted in invitations to be: an artist in residence at the German Cancer Research Centre (Heidelberg, Germany) introducing artists to Synthetic Biology; Art & Science field laboratory (by the Finnish Society of Bioart (Kilpisjärvi Biological Station, Lapland, Finland); and awarded an artist in residence grant by the Leverhulme Trust at the Geography Department, Durham University (UK). Presently Miguel Santos is a research fellow at the Laboratory of Research in Design and Art (LIDA), Escola Superior Arte e Design, Caldas da Rainha (ESAD.CR), Polytechnic of Leiria, where he continues to develop his artistic investigations on the possibilities and implications of producing works of art for nonhuman beings and geomorphic systems to decenter the human importance in the world.
