José Queirós is a marine ecologist that focus his research in polar marine ecosystems. He is highly interested in ecological interactions, resources management and species auto-ecology. In his PhD studied the deep-sea food webs of the Southern Ocean, in particular those associated with the Antarctic and Patagonian toothfish fisheries in the South Georgia and South Sandwich Islands. José made is degree in Biology at the University of Aveiro and his master in ecology at the University of Coimbra and MARE. He also worked as a visitor in several foreign institutes in France, Spain, United Kingdom and New Zealand. José is author of several publications in international peer-reviewed journals, but also of several oral and poster (by submission and invitation) presentations in national and international conferences. He counts with several months onboard fishing vessels in the Southern and Indian Oceans. During these voyages José and the crew found one of the largest Giant Antarctic Octopus and filmed to the NHK-Japan/National Geographic documentary "Hunt for the Giant Squid". Besides his academic career, José is highly enrolled in the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), being the President for the 2023/24 term. José believes that communicate science is an important tool to raise the awareness of the general public for the environmental threats.
