Maria José Umbelino Ferreira is Full Professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon, where she is currently the Coordinator of the Master in Medicinal and Biopharmaceutical Chemistry. She was the head of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry from 2018 -2020. MJU Ferreira has published more than 130 indexed peer-reviewed papers/book chapters (Scopus: h-index 36; Google Scholar: h-index 43) and supervised/co-supervised 44 PhD/MSc students and postdoctoral fellows. She is the Vice-President of the Phytochemical Society of Europe since 2022 and was the Regional Representative of the same Society for Iberia (2016-2020). She leads the research group of Natural Products Chemistry at Research Institute for Medicines (IMed.ULisboa), Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Lisbon (https://imed.ulisboa.pt/labs/maria-jose-ferreira/). MJU Ferreira is currently member of COST Action CA17104 and she was member COST Action CM1407, COST Action BM0701 and member of management committee of COST Action B16-Multidrug Resistance Reversal. She is currently member of the Editorial board of Molecules (MDPI), Plants (MDPI) and Phytochemical Analyses (WILEY). Moreover, she was also guest editor of Frontiers in Pharmacology (Frontiers) and Phytochemistry Reviews (Springer) and International Journal of Molecular Sciences (MDPI). Having background in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry and advanced spectroscopic techniques, Maria José main research interest is the isolation of new bioactive chemical scaffolds from plant sources and molecular derivatization of selected compounds, using hemi-synthetic methodologies. Her main goal is to discover anticancer compounds for targeting multidrug-resistant cancer cells, namely ABC-transporter modulators.
