Sandra Manuela Domingues dos Santos is a Medical Doctor specialized in Internal Medicine at the Coimbra Hospital and Universitary Centre, Portugal. She graduated in Biology in 2002, (BSc, University of Coimbra) and in Medicine in 2016 (MSc, University of Coimbra). She completed her PhD in Experimental Biology and Biomedicine in 2009, under the supervision of Prof. Ana Luísa Carvalho and Prof. Carlos Duarte. During her PhD, carried at the Universities of Coimbra, Dundee and Bordeaux, she was focused in understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying synaptic plasticity. She described a new interactors for AMPA type glutamate receptors, namely contactin associated protein 1 (CASPR-1), which was shown to regulate the trafficking of AMPA receptors to synapses. She is now interested in exploring how neuronal homeostasis acts to maintain network stability in the brain, and in understanding whether these processes are likely targets for dysfunction in several neuropsychiatric disorders. Moreover, as a Medical Doctor she is particularly interested in Palliative Care, Heart Failure, Diabetes, Nutrition and Obesity. Sandra published 24 articles in journals, has 2 section(s) of books and 1 book(s) and organized 4 events. She co-supervised 1 PhD dissertation, 2 MSc dissertations and one work of LSc/BSc completion. Sandra had participated as Principal investigator (PI) in two projects. As a researcher she participated in 14 other projects. She has contributed to manuscript peer-reviewing and has collaborated in the preparation of several grant proposals. She has extensive expertise in cellular and molecular biology techniques, including preparation of primary cultures of dissociated neurons, organotypical cultures, cloning and lentiviral production; widefield microscopy and data analysis; animal handling.
