Pedro Melo obtained his degree in Aquatic Sciences from the Instituto de Ciências Biomédicas de Abel Salazar (ICBAS), University of Porto in 1995. He pursued further studies and earned a Master's degree in Quality Control (Environment) from the Faculty of Pharmacy (FFUP), University of Porto in 2000. In 2006, he successfully completed his PhD in Human Biology from the Faculty of Medicine (FMUP), University of Porto. Subsequently, from 2007 to 2011, Pedro Melo conducted a Postdoctoral project focusing on neuronal aging at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology, University of Porto. He also served as a Postdoctoral fellow in a project titled "Cognition and synaptic function in calcium channel disease" (PTDC/SAU-NEU/100701/2008), funded by FCT and carried out at the Institute for Molecular and Cell Biology (IBMC). Currently, Pedro Melo holds the position of Adjunct Professor at the Escola Superior da Saúde. Additionally, he is actively engaged as a researcher at the Centro Interdisciplinar de Investigação Marinha e Ambiental, University of Porto, where his research interests lie in exploring the impact of psychopharmaceuticals on the brain and retina of marine vertebrates. His expertise in quantitative chromatography, acquired during his Master's studies on Quality Control of water pollutants, has been extensively utilized throughout his scientific career. Since the year 2000, Pedro Melo has directed his research towards investigating the effects of psychoactive substances on the development and aging of the central nervous system. Particularly, he has focused on studying the correlation between methamphetamine use and accelerated aging with respect to neurochemistry and recognition memory. The data stemming from his PhD and Postdoctoral projects have contributed to six first-author publications in international scientific journals with peer review. Furthermore, Pedro Melo has contributed significantly to academia through various roles. He authored a chapter in the book "Bases Micronutricionales de la Salud Ocular" (2009) published by THEA LABS. He served as a co-supervisor for a PhD student from the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, Universidade de São Paulo (Brazil), whose research was financed by CAPES/4389/07-7 and conducted at FMUP and IBMC. Additionally, he possesses teaching and supervision experience at postgraduate levels (Ph.D. and Master levels) and has participated in PhD Evaluation Committees for doctoral dissertations. Moreover, Pedro Melo has editorial experience as the former editor of the European Journal of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences. He also serves as an ad hoc reviewer for various international peer-reviewed journals and collaborates on programs related to society and science. Since 2005, he has maintained a fruitful collaboration, encompassing research and postgraduate teaching, with Maria Dolores Pinazo Duran, head of the Unidad de Investigación Oftalmológica Santiago Grisólia and Professor at the Facultat de Medicine I Odontologia of the Universitat de Valencia, Spain.
