Mariana Andrade is currently a fourth-year PhD candidate in Biomedical Sciences, specializing in Microbiology, at IHMT-NOVA. Her doctoral research focuses on drug repurposing for efflux and biofilm inhibition in staphylococci. She holds a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from IHMT-NOVA (2022), and a Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry from FCT-NOVA (2019). Her main research interests include antimicrobial resistance, efflux mechanisms, biofilm formation, drug repurposing, and the Galleria mellonella infection model. She actively contributes to the implementation and maintenance of the G. mellonella infection model at her host institution. Mariana has participated as a team member in four R&D projects: ProVec (FCT, 2024.14380.PEX), DREBI (FCT, 2022.07931.PTDC), BIOSAFE (FEDER/FCT, LISBOA-01-0145-FEDER-030713, PTCT/CAL-EST/30713/2017), and Clarifying the role of efflux and mobilome on antimicrobial resistance and virulence in staphylococci (Bilateral PT-Germany FCT/DAAD mobility project, 2022.15300.CBM). To date, she has authored or co-authored four peer-reviewed international publications, as well as 33 posters and nine oral presentations at national and international conferences. She serves as the Biomedical Sciences PhD student representative on the Pedagogic Council of IHMT-NOVA and is a member of the “PRIME – Pathogen Resistance, Infection and Molecular Epidemiology” group of the Global Health and Tropical Medicine (GHTM) research center. Additionally, she is a member of the Portuguese Society for Microbiology (SPM) and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID). Mariana is also actively involved in science outreach and public engagement activities, including the AMR Summer School, European Researchers’ Night, Open Days, and International Microorganism Day.
