Laura Cullen finished her graduation (2021) and master’s (2023) degrees in chemical engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) with final grades of 17 and 18, respectively. At university, she was Leader of the Pedagogical Department of the Chemical Engineering Students' Association (NEEQ-FEUP), was part of the Organising Committee of 'XXII Jornadas de Engenharia Química' and mentored first-year students under the mentoring programme ConnEQt. She is co-author of the paper 'Valorisation of Kiwifruit Residues and their Application in an Anti-ageing Facial Cream', written under the scope of the Product Engineering unit course and published in the U.Porto Journal of Engineering (Scopus-indexed) (http://dx.doi.org/10.24840/2183-6493_008.005_0008). She was co-speaker in an oral presentation of this work done in the workshop 'Desenvolvimento de produtos de alto valor acrescentado baseados em matérias-primas naturais da região Norte', held at FEUP in July 2022. She participated in various scientific events and enrolled in activities for the promotion of science and technology: volunteered for Semana Profissão: Engenheiro, held an interview for the association Ordem dos Engenheiros da Região Norte, and was invited to participate in the 1st edition of the book ‘Raparigas na Ciência’, launched by the Ciência Viva association in 2022. Regarding professional experience, she was a monitor at the FEUP Project unit course (09/2022-12/2022), had a scientific initiation scholarship under the project #Summer@LEPABE_2021 (08/2021-09/2021), and a scientific scholarship under the Multiannual Funding 2020-2023 for the unit LSRE-LCM (UIDB/50020/2020_UIDP/50020/2020) during and after the completion of her MSc thesis (02/2023-10/2023). Furthermore, she was a volunteer collaborator at Centro de Inovação em Engenharia e Tecnologia Industrial (CIETI-ISEP) from 07/2019-02/2023. Her MSc thesis, held at LSRE-LCM, focused on the theme 'NETmix crystalliser for nutrients recovery from side-stream digestate'. She used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools and conducted tracer experiments to study the mixing dynamics mechanisms in the meso-reactor NETmix when operated with large feed flowrate ratios. The objective was to evaluate NETmix's ability to produce struvite crystals from wastewater effluents. The results from this work were presented as poster communications at the 5th Doctoral Congress in Engineering (Porto, Portugal) and the 17th European Conference on Mixing (Porto, Portugal). This work also resulted in writing a scientific paper as first author, currently under review at Chemical Engineering Science. Since October 2023, she has been a research fellow at LSRE-LCM under the OZONE4WATER project (https://doi.org/10.54499/PTDC/EAM-AMB/4702/2020). She is currently using CFD tools to optimise the geometry of an ozone sidestream injection scheme incorporated in a pilot installation developed for the efficient ozonation of wastewater effluents. She tutored a BSc thesis entitled 'Estudo da assimetria de caudais no reator mesoestruturado NETmix' during 09/2023-02/2024, volunteered for Mostra U.Porto 2024, and was part of the Organising Committee of Olimpíadas de Química Júnior 2024. She is currently part of the Local Organising Committee of the Winter School on Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) and Disinfection By-Products (DBPs): Occurrence, Impact and Elimination and of the International Congress EA3G2024, both to be held in Vila Nova de Gaia (Portugal) in November 2024.
