Marta Macedo is a researcher at the Institute of Contemporary History, NOVA University Lisbon. She holds a degree in Architecture (2001) and a PdD in Architecture, Theory and History (2010) awarded by the University of Coimbra. In her work, she combines the methods and theoretical concerns of the history of science and technology, agricultural history and environmental studies to establish interdisciplinary dialogues (e.g. with history of labour, history of capitalism) and to contribute to several conversations reflecting urgent contemporary issues (e.g. climate change, social and racial inequalities). In her monograph, 'Projectar e Construir a Nação: Engenheiros, ciência e território em Portugal no século XIX' (Planning and building the nation: engineers, science and landscape in 19th century Portugal) (Lisboa: Imprensa de Ciências Sociais, 2012) she analysed the relationship between 19th century Portuguese state-building, internal colonisation and national identity politics. In 2017 she joined as postdoctoral researcher the multi-disciplinary team of the ERC Project 'The colour of labour: the racialized lives of migrants', coordinated by Cristiana Bastos, based at the Institute of Social Sciences, University of Lisbon. By incorporating mobility, materiality and technology into the historical analysis of labour practices, she has produced original research on the history of plantations across political boundaries. From 2010 until 2017 she held a postdoctoral position at the Interuniversity Center for the History of Sciences and Technology, University of Lisbon. She was also a visiting scholar at the University of California Los Angeles (2010-2011). She participated in three FCT funded projects, 'The Spaces of Portuguese Technoscience' (2006-2009), 'Anthropolands: Engineering the Anthropocene' (2016-2019) and 'Visions of Lisbon' (2016-2019) and supervised two PhD dissertations. Besides various book chapters and articles in major international journals (Technology and Culture, Agricultural History, Mobilities, Labor, The Journal of Architecture, The Journal of Ethnobotany), she co-edited with Tiago Saraiva the volume 'Capital científica: práticas da ciência em Lisboa e a história contemporânea' (Scientific Capital: practices of science and the contemporary history of Portugal) (Lisboa: Imprensa de Ciências Sociais, 2019) and with Colette Le Petitcorps and Irene Peano she co-edited the volume 'Global plantations in the modern world: sovereignties, ecologies, afterlives' (Cham: Palgrave Macmillan, 2023). She has also participated in numerous national and international conferences and acted as referee for high-ranking journals. Over the years, her work has also been driven by the conviction that history should also be of relevance beyond academia. As such, she have explored different strategies for communicating her research to wider audiences.
