Margarida Espadinha graduated in Applied Chemistry (Organic Chemistry field), at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon in July 2013 (Final Grade: 15/20). The final project of the licentiate degree was entitled “Development of a New Method of Synthesis of Metabolites of Propofol” (Final Grade: 18/20). Margarida Espadinha has received a master’s degree in Bioorganic Chemistry, at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon (2013-2015) (Final Grade: 18/20). Margarida Espadinha's master thesis was carried out at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon, under supervision of Dr. Maria M. M. Santos and entitled “Enantiopure Bicyclic Lactams: Synthesis and Biological Evaluation” (2014-2015) (Grade: 19/20). After a short stay at the Institute of chemistry CNRS (Nice, France), under a STSM-CM1106 supported by the Cost Action, she started a research grant funded by pharmaceutical company Hovione Farmaciência SA with the project entitled "Synthetic process development and characterization of HOV14-731, an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) of the anti-muscarinic class” (2015-2016). This collaborative project between Hovione Farmaciência SA and Santo’s group culminated in an International Patent (WO 2018087561 A1) and 1 publication in a scientific journal. In 2016, she started a PhD under the PhD Program MedChemTrain and funded by FCT (SFRH/BD/117931/2016). Margarida Espadinha's research project is related with the development of p53 activators by targeting p53 protein-protein interactions, in the Faculty of Pharmacy (University of Lisbon), under supervision of Dr. Maria M. M. Santos, Prof. Dr. Cecília Rodrigues and Prof. Dr. Stuart J. Conway (Oxford University). She's also team member of an approved FCT project (PTDC/QUI-QOR/29664/2017). Since 2015, she has 8 publications in reputed scientific journals, 1 patent and 1 book chapter. She also attended to several scientific congresses (national and international) and she was organization member of two of them (national). In 2019, Margarida Espadinha earned an EFMC grant to attend the 8th EFMC International Symposium on Advanced in Synthetic and Medicinal Chemistry and the 6th EFMC Young Medicinal Chemist Symposium in Athens, Greece.
