Estibaliz Gómez de Mariscal leads the AI and Microscopy for BioMedical Discovery (AIM4Bio) group at NOVA Institute for Medical Systems Biology (NIMSB). She develops new AI-powered image-driven approaches to unveil cellular behaviour. -BACKGROUND- She obtained a 5-years degree in Mathematics at Universidad del País Vasco, Spain (2014) and a MSc in Statistical and Computational Data Processing from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain (2016). Supported by a 4-year scholarship for tuition fees and salary, she defended her PhD in Mathematical Engineering at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain, in 2021/09/28, was awarded Cum Laude and recognised with the Outstanding Thesis Prize from the university. Since 2021, she has been a postdoctoral fellow at Henriques Lab (IGC, GIMM, and now in ITQB). Overall, she secured funds (~3.715M) via grants (PhD, MSc & postdoc(EMBO,FCT CEEC), Wellcome Trust Discovery Award), European Cost Actions (international mobility) and SIB2 President Innovation Award. -TEACHING & SUPERVISION- She was a teacher assistant in bioimage analysis, biomedical microdevices and transport phenomena courses in BSc and MSc degrees, and lecturer in KTH and University of Stockholm. She supervised 2 BSc final projects, a summer research lab student from Johns Hopkins University, and co-supervised internationally a BSc, 2 MSc and, currently, a PhD student, 2 software engineers and 1 BSc. She was in the committee of 1 MSc and 3 PhD thesis defences. -SCIENTIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS- Her research lies in the intersection between AI, image processing and life sciences. She has 19 JCR publications, 6 preprints, 1 book chapter and 3 peer-reviewed conferences, with a cumulative impact factor of 52.987. Last corresponding author of 2 publications; first-author of 5 papers, 3 preprints, 1 book chapter, 2 computer sciences conferences. 4 papers in top 1% and 3 in top 10% journals in Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology; 1 paper in the top 5% journals in Chemistry, and 1 paper in top 2% and 2 in top 10% journals in Multidisciplinary Sciences (Scimago, 2024). She has been an invited speaker and presented her work at more than 20 international conferences in oral (SPAOM19,20,25; ISBI20, ELMI21&25, Bioimage Informatics 2021, FOM2022&23, SMLMS25), poster communications (ISBI18, ELMI18, SPAOM18, NEUBIAS Symposium 2020, CBIA21, MIDL 2022, Imaging Cell Dynamics 2023) and community workshops (NEUBIAS 2020&23, IEEE SPS-SS on Biomedical Signal and Image Processing - Chile 2020). She was an invited speaker 16 times (CBIAS22, FENS Forum22, Imaging Life: The future) and faculty to schools (ZIDAS 20&21, DL@MBL22, Front. in Neurophotonics CERVO 2022&23, EBI-EMBL21&22&23, EMBO practical courses). -OUTREACH- Estibaliz is a reviewer for journals (Nat Methods, Nat Machine Intelligence, IEEE Transactions on Medical Imaging, Medical Image Analysis), conferences (MICCAI, MIDL, ISBI) and projects (NSERC). She was involved in scientific dissemination and promotion of diversity activities (International Day of Women and Girls in Science, February 11, 2018-2019, Week of Science Activities UC3M 2018, ITQB day 2025). -COLLABORATIONS- Her work shows productive international collaboration with renowned institutions (Wirtz Lab at Johns Hopkins University, Masaryk University, Computer Vision Group at the Uni. of Freiburg, EPFL, EMBL, University of Turku, Human Technopole). She is part of the Bioimage.IO initiative and the Cell Tracking Challenge. -OPEN SCIENCE- Committed to open-science, she publishes all software advances under the FAIR principles (DeepImageJ, pMoSS, DeepBacs, BioImage.IO, microscopy-dl-suite, Cell Tracking Challenge, DL4MicEverywhere, DinoSIM). She communicates openly via X, bsky and LinkedIn (@gomez_mariscal, summing 2500 followers), image.sc forum and GitHub(@esgomem).
