Graduated in Biology at the University of Porto (1990). Award for the best student from Eng. António de Almeida Foundation. PhD in Sciences, specializing in microbiology, bioenergetics, and metabolism at the University of Minho (1999). Associate Professor since 2012 at U.Minho. Fulbrighter Professor at the UC Davis in the USA (2012). Professor at the University of Bologna (Italy), the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), the University of Tours, the University of Bordeaux, and the Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 (France) in Erasmus. Integrated member of the CBMA and group leader in the field of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology of Grapevine. PI or Co-PI for various research and international cooperation projects and supervisor of multiple PhD and postdoctoral projects. Member of the management committee for three COST Actions. Evaluator for scientific projects and scholarships at both national and international levels. Member of the editorial board of three Q1 Journals. Coordinated the integration of ECUM into the collaborative laboratories ADVID Vine and Wine. Course director for the Agrichains Doctoral Program at U.Minho till 2023. Director of the CITAB Research Centre-UMinho Pole (2016-2020). Director of the Biology Department from 2018 to 2020. Member of the Scientific Council and the School Council of ECUM since 2019. Current position: Vice-President of the School of Science for Cooperation and Internationalization. FIVE KEY PRODUCTIONS (2018-2023): i) Foundational knowledge on solute transport and metabolism in plant response to environmental stress: recognized as an international leader in this field, which can inform strategies for crop improvement and stress tolerance breeding programs. Achievements: R&D projects (e.g. PI of PTDC/BIA-FBT/28165/2017), PhD grants, international cooperation, and core papers in the period and before (e.g. Breia et al. 2020; Breia et al. 2021; Noronha et al. 2020). ii) Understanding diseases through omics analysis: Relevant data regarding the composition and dynamics of key metabolites and transcripts involved in fruit development, ripening, and stress responses: findings of global significance contributing to the characterization of grape quality attributes and the optimization of viticultural practices. Achievements: research projects (e.g. co-PI of PTDC/BIA-FBT/30341/2017; PI at UMinho of PTDC/ASP-HOR/28485/2017), PhD grants, international cooperation, and core papers in the period (e.g. Teixeira et al. 2020; Teixeira et al. 2023). iii) Metabarcoding and culturomics for unveiling plant microbiota: leading research on metabolic and microbial networks associated with grape berry development and responses to environmental stresses. Achievements: research projects (e.g. PI of GrapeMicrobiota - PTDC/BAA-AGR/2691/2020), PhD grants, international cooperation, and core papers in the period (e.g. Martins et al. 2022; 2023; Ayogu et al. 2023). iv) Applications of nanoparticles in eco-friendly disease management: new insights into the interactions between nanomaterials and cells. The seminal paper by Barbosa et al. (2019) showed for the first time that resveratrol-loaded liposomes are internalized by endocytosis. Role in designing and PI at CBMA of the EU project VINNI (2024-2028) aimed to develop new eco-friendly nano biopesticides for managing diseases in vineyards. v) Contributions to sustainable agricultural practices: collaboration with stakeholders (e.g ADVID, Sogrape, Sogeninus). Member of Colab- ADVID vines and wines. Organizer of a blended ERASMUS intensive program (BIP) on 'Plants in a Changing Climate,' (UMinho in 2024), involving three foreign universities and tens of high-graduate students. Coordinator of the cluster “climate change” of the Arqus Alliance at UMinho. PI at CBMA of the AgrifoodXXI project (UTAD, UPorto and UMinho).
