Hernâni Gerós graduated in Biology from the University of Porto (1990) and obtained a PhD in Sciences from the University of Minho (1999), specializing in microbiology, bioenergetics and metabolism. He has been Associate Professor with Habilitation at the University of Minho since 2012. He was a Fulbright Visiting Professor at the University of California, Davis (2012) and has taught or conducted research at several European universities, including Bologna, Leuven, Tours, Bordeaux and Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1, through Erasmus missions. He is an integrated member of CBMA (Centre of Molecular and Environmental Biology) and leads a research group working at the interface between plant physiology, plant–microbe interactions and grapevine metabolism. His research focuses on the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying plant responses to environmental stresses, grapevine fruit development and quality, and the role of plant-associated microbiota in crop performance and sustainability. He has coordinated and participated in several national and international research projects and has supervised numerous PhD and postdoctoral researchers. He has served as evaluator for research funding agencies at national and international levels, as member of the management committee of three COST Actions, and as editorial board member of several Q1 journals. Beyond research, he has held several academic leadership positions at the University of Minho, including Director of the Department of Biology, Director of the CITAB Research Centre – UMinho Pole, Vice-President of the School of Sciences for Cooperation and Internationalization, and Vice-Rector of the University of Minho. Since 2026, he has served as President of the Scientific Council of the School of Sciences. Key scientific contributions (recent years) i) Plant metabolism and stress physiology Internationally recognized contributions to the understanding of solute transport, metabolism and energy balance in plant responses to environmental stresses, providing a physiological basis for crop resilience and improved stress tolerance. ii) Grapevine metabolomics and fruit quality Identification of key metabolic and transcriptomic networks involved in grape berry development, ripening and responses to environmental stresses, contributing to a better understanding of grape quality traits and the optimization of viticultural practices. iii) Grapevine microbiota and plant–microbe interactions Development of integrated metabarcoding and culturomics approaches to characterize grapevine-associated microbiota and its role in plant physiology, fruit quality and microbial interactions. iv) Bio-based strategies for plant protection Research on innovative approaches for sustainable disease management, including studies on nanomaterials, microbial interactions and bioactive compounds. Participation as PI at CBMA in the Horizon Europe project VINNY (2024–2028) aimed at developing eco-friendly nano-biopesticides for viticulture. v) Sustainable agriculture and knowledge transfer Active collaboration with stakeholders and industry partners (e.g. ADVID, Sogrape), contributing to innovation in the viticulture and agri-food sectors. Coordinator and participant in several collaborative projects addressing climate change, sustainable agriculture and vineyard management, including acting as the University of Minho coordinator in the CCDR-NORTE project “Sinergias científicas e tecnológicas para o desenvolvimento da cadeia da vinha e do vinho na Região Norte” (UTAD, UPorto and UMinho), 2025–2028.
