I am currently an Assistant Professor at Autonomous University of Lisbon and a researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre for History, Cultures and Societies (CIDEHUS) of the University of Évora. I am also Assistant Professor Adjunct at NOVA-School of Business and Economics. At CIDEHUS I am the elected coordinator of the research group "Societal Changes", and, at the Autonomous University of Lisbon I am the elected coordinator of Polo CIDEHUS.UAL, CIDEHUS' Research Unit at Autónoma. I am a historian of early modern empires. My doctoral thesis (European University Institute, 2014) focused on how the integration of the Portuguese empire into the Catholic Monarchy (1580-1640) impacted on its government. The EUI encouraged approaches such as global history and connected histories, and my research benefited from this academic environment. Albeit focused on the case of Hormuz and the regional context of the Persian Gulf, I sought comparisons and connections with other territories in America and Asia. My thesis was based on research carried out in archives in Portugal, Spain, India, and Brazil. Since one of the conclusions of my thesis was that the integration of Portugal into the Catholic Monarchy had a much greater impact on the Portuguese territories in Asia than commonly admitted, I made this the focus of my first postdoctoral project, funded by FCT (2015-2016). This was when I realized the degree of influence of the Castilian Council of State on the government of the Portuguese colonial territories, and when I started an exhaustive collection of this documentation in the archives of Simancas, Spain. I was then looking at both empires in a fully-integrated perspective, and I gradually sought new research questions. I was offered a research fellowship by the John Carter Brown Library (Brown University, USA) in 2016, where I studied the differences between the Spanish and the Portuguese black legend discourses in the Americas and in Asia, and was led to the analysis of violence in the making of the Iberian empires. This was the occasion to bridge my postdoctoral research on the Portuguese empire in Asia with the Marie Curie individual fellowship that I was awarded with by the European Commission (2016-2018), where I sought to relate the history of the Iberian empires with the history of human rights, observing how the government of this integrated Iberian empire dealt with indigenous rights, slavery, religious differences and violence in different colonial spaces across the globe.
