Vilma A. Sardão is an Assistant Investigator at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing (MIA-Portugal), University of Coimbra. She graduated in Biochemistry from the University of Coimbra in 2002 and obtained her Ph.D. in Cell Biology in 2008 at the same University. During her Ph.D. and Postdoc, she had 47 months of International experience at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, USA. She has gathered robust technical laboratory know-how in mitochondrial physiology and respirometry, cell culture, western blot, microscopy, and other cellular and molecular biology methods. Vilma A. Sardão has been focusing her career on mitochondria's role in cell physiology, pathology, and toxicology (>40 published papers). Her scientific background allowed her to establish national and international collaborations in interdisciplinary fields. Her scientific interests focus on mitochondrial remodeling during hormonal status alteration after menopause and the associated development of menopause-associated pathologies. Vilma has currently 53 publications in international peer-reviewed journals (22 in Q1 journals, 14 as first/last author, >1522-2330 citations, h-index 22-27, source: Web of Science/Google Scholar), six book chapters, 21 invited oral communications, more than 40 selected oral communications, and more than 85 posters in national and international conferences. She also obtained some scientific prizes, including the award for student Merit from the University of Coimbra (2002), the Aventis Prize for Scientific Research (2003), and the Graduate Student/Postdoc award, endorsed by the Society for Heart and Vascular Metabolism, 2006.

  1. Role of mtDNA-related mitoepigenetic phenomena in cancer. Abnormal mitochondrial function has long been associated with the development and the progression of cancer. Multiple defects in the mitochondrial genome have been reported for various cancers, however the often disregarded mitochondrial epigenetic landscape provides an additional source of deregulation that may contribute to carcinogenesis.. 2015. 2. Analysis of pro-apoptotic protein trafficking to and from mitochondria. Mitochondria play a key role in cell death and its regulation. The permeabilization of the outer mitochondrial membrane which is mainly controlled by proteins of the BCL-2 family, is a key event that can be directly induced by p53 and results in the release of pro-apoptotic factors to the cytosol, such as cytochrome c, second mitochondria derived activator of caspases/direct inhibitor-of-apoptosis. 2015. 3. Mitochondrial apoptosis-inducing factor is involved in doxorubicin-induced toxicity on H9c2 cardiomyoblasts. The cardiotoxicity induced by the anti-cancer doxorubicin involves increased oxidative stress, disruption of calcium homeostasis and activation of cardiomyocyte death. Nevertheless, antioxidants and caspase inhibitors often show little efficacy in preventing cell death. We hypothesize that a caspase-independent cell death mechanism with the release of the apoptosis-inducing factor from mitochondri. 2014. 4. ß-adrenergic over-stimulation and cardio-myocyte apoptosis: two receptors, one organelle, two fates?. Neuro-hormonal regulation of cardiac function via cathecol-amines results in increased heart rate and contractility. A persistent adrenergic tone, however, is an insult to the heart, affecting its regular homeostasis, altering morphology and gene expression patterns, as well as inducing apoptosis of cardio-myocytes. At the same time as being the main oxygen consumers, mitochondria are also key to. 2014. Resveratrol (3,5,40-trihydroxy-trans stilbene) is commonly recognized by its antioxidant properties. Despite its beneficial qualities, the toxic effects of this natural compound are still unknown. Since mitochondria are essential to support the energy-dependent regulation of several cell functions, the objective of this study was to evaluate resveratrol effects on rat brain and liver mitochondrial. 2013. 7. Mitochondrial disruption occurs downstream from ß-adrenergic overactivation by isoproterenol in differentiated, but not undifferentiated H9c2 cardiomyoblasts: Differential activation of stress and survival pathways. ß-Adrenergic receptor stimulation plays an important role in cardiomyocyte stress responses, which may result in apoptosis and cardiovascular degeneration. We previously demonstrated that toxicity of the ß-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol on H9c2 cardiomyoblasts depends on the stage of cell differentiation. We now investigate ß-adrenergic receptor downstream signaling pathways and stress responses. 2013. 8. Investigating drug-induced mitochondrial toxicity: a biosensor to increase drug safety?. Mitochondria are recognized as the producers of the majority of energy cells need for their normal activity. In fact, it is now known that mitochondria are not only involved in cell ca. 2009. Abstract Doxorubicin (Dox) is a very potent antineoplastic agent used against several types of cancer, despite a cumulative cardiomyopathy that reduces the therapeutic index for treatment. H9c2 myoblast cells have been used as an in vitro model to study biochemical alterations induced by Dox treatment on cardiomyocyte cells. Berberine [Natural Yellow 18, 5,6-dihydro-9,10-dimethoxybenzo(g)-1,3-benzodioxolo(5,6-a)quinolizinium] is an alkaloid present in plant extracts and has a history of use in traditional Chinese and Native American medicine. Abstract Cholestasis and other liver diseases may affect the heart through the toxic effects of the retained bile acids on cardiac mitochondria, which could explain the origin of hepatic-derived cardiomyopathies. The heart is one of the organs affected during the later stages of diabetes. Mitochondrial function has already been proposed to be affected during the course of diabetes. The possible toxic effects of caffeine on heart mitochondria are still poorly understood. The influence of caffeine on the mitochondrial permeability. 2002.
