Zara Fani Gonçalves Teixeira

Zara Teixeira is a researcher at MARE - Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, Department of Life Sciences, University of Coimbra, a member of MARE's Board of Directors (responsible for the Dissemination and Science Communication Actions affairs), and chairman of IMAR's General Assembly. She is a Biologist, with a PhD in Biosciences and a MSc in Geographic Information Systems, whose research interests focus on studying interactions between humans and the natural world in geographic space and time. She uses a multidisciplinary approach that falls mainly within the scientific field of Environmental Geography and Stewardship mostly applied to marine, coastal and estuarine ecosystems. Her work includes environmental and ecosystem services assessment and management; spatial analysis and modelling; key players' engagement; and Ocean Literacy research. She is also deeply involved in science communication and environmental education to a wide variety of audiences and in different contexts. Currently, she is responsible for the Communications Office of MARE, a member of the scientific committee of Escola Azul (an educational program from the Portuguese Ministry of the Sea) and co-coordinator of DivEco (a science communication network from SPECO). She has been the PI of Ocean Literacy projects; a mentor of school projects in Ocean Literacy; coordinator and trainer of several accredited training courses for school teachers; and has coordinated and/or participated in more than 650 dissemination and communication activities. Her experience has been consolidated over the years through participation as a PI, project manager, task leader, team member and/or collaborator in 40 international and national projects; scientific publications in relevant international peer-reviewed journals; and successful grant writing and fundraising. She has also contributed to the training and career development of researchers and young students (Vocational Course of Secondary Level interns; ERASMUS+ Traineeship; SANTANDER/UNIVERSIDADES intern; R&D fellows, Graduate students; M.Sc. and Ph.D.) and has proven teaching experience in marine ecology, geographic information systems, ecosystem services, natural coastal heritage and ocean literacy issues.
