M Rubal (MR) completed his PhD degree in biology in 2008 by the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain). In 2012, he was awarded a Post-Doctoral Fellowship by the FCT (SFRH/BPD/81567/2011) in the CIIMAR until 2015 when he won a second Post-Doctoral FCT grant (SFRH/BPD/104225/2014) until 2018. From 2018 to January 2023 M. Rubal was auxiliar researcher in CIIMAR. Currently, M. Rubal is auxiliary researcher in the CBMA (University of Minho) and invited professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Minho. MR has published a chapter book, 72 papers in peer review journals and 19 congress proceedings. He played a leading role in most of them being the first, corresponding or senior author. He has published with more than one hundred co-authors from 31 different countries, ascertaining his international research and in Q1 journals of 6 different categories (Ecology; Environmental Sciences; Marine and Fresh Water Biology; Multidisciplinary Sciences; Plan Sciences; Zoology), showing his multidisciplinary expertise. Additionally, he has given more than one hundred presentations at scientific meetings, including 6 invited communications. MR has actively participated in more than twenty research projects, mainly in last years, including a COST action (EMBOS) that involved 25 foreign institutions, a LIFE project (SEACAN), two EEA grants (BIOMETORE and BIOMAR). As proof of his research independence and leadership, he was PI of the project Val-Wrack, funded by FCT, co-IP of a cross-border cooperation project in the Euroregion AAA with University of Pablo Olavide and I also get funds offering services of marine fauna identification. Since my PhD, my research has been focused on marine ecology and biodiversity. During my PhD I acquired strong taxonomic skills about marine invertebrates and wide experience in ecology and experimental design in my postdoctoral research, particularly elucidating the effects of anthropogenic stressors (e.g., invasions, global warming, pollution) on marine ecosystems. Nowadays, I combine basic and applied research, I have expanded my scientific interests to understand consequences of anthropogenic stressors on human wellbeing and how ameliorate their impacts on ecosystems, by using nature-based solutions. MR has supervised two postdoctoral researchers, 3 PhD students, 8 MSc students and more than 30 BSc students. Many of these supervisions were in collaboration with foreign institutions from Estonia, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany and Spain. In recognition of his scientific merit, he has been invited to lecturer Master Programs in the University of Porto, University of Santiago de Compostela and in the PhD program on Marine Science Technology and Management from the International Campus of Excellence Do-Mar (Spain). MR has acted as jury of academic degrees 17 times. His research merit is also internationally recognised by frequent invitations for integrating panels to evaluate projects for agencies from Czech Republic, Poland, Spain, Costa Rica or EU (COST-Actions). He is also Editor in PLOS ONE, Frontiers in Marine Science, Diversity and Sustainability and acted as reviewer in more than 70 different journals. He has also integrated the scientific and organising committee in international congresses (e.g., SETAC, IECD2022 or UNITAS MALACOLOGICA). In 2017, MR received an IACOBUS visiting-grant to work in the University of Vigo, Spain. He also participated in different oceanographic campaigns in the Atlantic Ocean. He is usually involved in outreach programs of scientific divulgation, programs with schools that includes training program for teachers, in international citizen science programs as Spring school and in scientific dissemination through several interviews for journals, seminars and demonstrations at schools. In recognition of his scientific career, he got the positive evaluation as Associate Professor by Spanish National Agency for Quality Assessment.
