Élia Roldão is a specialist in the conservation of photographs, committed to research and developing conservation solutions and preservation guidelines to safeguard photographic materials and photograph collections. After a decade of research on the identification and conservation of film-based negatives, her research is now focused on technical art studies and on setting up conservation strategies for photographic prints and mixed media photographic artworks. This career change results from the collaborative works and protocols that Roldão has established between research centres and cultural heritage institutions since 2016. These collaborations allowed to survey conservation needs within the collections/institutions. One of Roldão main research goals is to respond to the urgent needs in museum collections holding such complex and challenging artworks, by providing sustainable and long-term solutions for the preservation of the collections, and delivering working tools for end-users. For that, she supports her work on inter-disciplinary approaches (including materials characterization and testing) to develop conservation and exhibition guidelines, aiming at improving museum and archives practices and simultaneously disclosure collections. In this way, her work also contributes to the definition and strengthening of a network between institutions and teams devoted to the conservation of cultural heritage. Élia Roldão holds a PhD in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage - Specialization in Conservation Sciences, from NOVA University Lisbon (2018). She has vast experience in conservation and restoration of photographs and in preventive conservation of historical and contemporary collections photographic collections (negatives, prints, albums, film), and worked in several Portuguese institutions (2000 to 2021). Since 2011, she has been lecturing and teaching in the most renowned Portuguese Universities (FCT-NOVA; Univ. Católica, Univ. Lusófona, ESAD-FRESS). Currently, she is an Invited Assistant Professor at DCR NOVA, responsible for teaching the Photo-documentation, Diagnosis and Conservation of Photography and Other Records, and Conservation and Restoration of Photographs curricular units, within the bachelor and Master degrees, and supervising Master thesis in the field of preventive conservation and conservation of photographs. Recently, she has received the 'FCT-NOVA Best Professor 2021 Award', attributed by the DCR-NOVA students. Roldão integrated five funded projects (3 national and 2 European) focused on plastic, filmic and photographic heritage, in which she had the privilege of working with multi-disciplinary teams. Her scientific track record comprises seven scientific publications (peer-reviewed) and three book chapters, which reflect the efforts made in other professional fields such as training. Besides academic courses, she is also responsible for designing and lecturing 30 seminars and workshops (from 2001 to 2021), showing her devotion to sharing knowledge and developing the field of conservation of photographs in Portugal. Her supervision competencies include four master's thesis. She also participated in 16 conferences, four as an invited speaker and moderator on a symposium panel. She is a member of the American Institute for Conservation and Restoration (AIC), of the Associação Portuguesa de Conservadores Restauradores de Portugal (ARP), of the Gruppo Del Colore ' Associazone Italiana Colore, and of the Photography Network. In 2021 she was elected member of the Collaborative Workshop in Photograph Conservation Advisory Committee (CWPCAC - FAIC), and recently was invited to be page compiler for the entry 'Photograph Conservation Training' in the Photographic Materials Group (PMG) Wiki Committee. In 2018, Roldão co-founded the first spin-off of DCR, NEON Art Conservation Lda, a company dedicated to the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage.
