Pedro Morais is currently an Assistant PhD Researcher within the scientific career track at 2Ai-IPCA. In 2019, he successfully earned his Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Porto, Portugal, and Biomedical Sciences from KU Leuven, Belgium, with his doctoral thesis being a collaborative effort between FEUP/INEGI, KU Leuven, and ICVS/3B's. The primary focus of his research was the development of innovative image-based solutions to enhance the planning of left atrial interventions. Previously, in 2013, Pedro obtained an MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Minho. His master's dissertation was centered on cardiac motion and deformation estimation, a collaborative venture between the University of Minho and KU Leuven. His current academic and research interests encompass a wide range, including computer vision, medical imaging processing, image segmentation, image-guided minimally invasive interventions, image tracking, image fusion, artificial intelligence, software development, robotics, and biomedical applications. Pedro has been recognized with a total of 7 prizes and/or mentions in the field of Engineering Sciences and Technologies. In 2019, Pedro's team was recognized as a finalist for the KUKA Innovation Award, presenting a groundbreaking collaborative robotic solution at the MEDICA fair in Dusseldorf, Germany. Pedro has made significant contributions to academic literature, having published 40 ISI-indexed international peer-reviewed journals as the first/last author (7 Q1, 2 Q2, 1 Q3, 1 Q4) or as a co-author (18 Q1, 9 Q2, 2 Q3). In addition to his journal publications, he holds 5 patents, with 1 patent in the regional phase EPO and US, 2 patents in the European phase, and 2 provisional patents. Pedro has presented more than 50 proceedings in international conferences (SPIE, EMBC, FIMH) and over 30 abstracts in international and national congresses. Beyond his academic achievements, Pedro has actively participated in conferences, delivering 8 oral presentations, 4 invited oral presentations, 5 posters, and receiving 7 prizes/recognitions in international events. With an h-index of 16 (according to Scopus), Pedro has also contributed as a member of the technical committee for over 20 international/national conferences and served as a member of the organizing committee for three international conferences and four national events. Pedro's dedication extends to education, as he began lecturing in a higher education institute since 2016. He has successfully supervised 12 bachelor and eleven master students (6 already completed with success), 5 Ph.D. students (2 scholarships directly funded by FCT and 3 through R&D projects - all ongoing projects), and actively participated in multiple academic Juries. Additionally, Pedro has played a key role in 7 funded projects (5 projects completed in 2023) as the Principal Investigator (PI) or co-PI and is a member of 4 other projects (3 already completed). As a PI or co-PI, Pedro already guaranteed more than >4M€ in R&D funding. Notably, he achieved two technology transfers, commercializing his master thesis software to a specific medical company (Medviso, Lund, Sweden) in 2015 and releasing a new update of the software in 2019. Within the scope of ongoing projects, Pedro also actively contributes to shaping sound scientific practices at IPCA. He serves as a Research and Innovation Ambassador, playing a pivotal role in defining a comprehensive research career development program. This collaborative effort is part of the RUN-EU European consortium of universities, wherein Pedro not only has a say in formulating strategies for identifying training needs but is also involved in the implementation of a regular research training workshop program. Additionally, he is involved in creating an online scientific portfolio for all RUN-EU members. This initiative aims to provide training opportunities for both emerging and experienced researchers.
