Summary: The work developed during my career resulted on the advancement of knowledge on the molecular mechanisms driving aging and disease. During my PhD, I demonstrated that DNA repair proteins could act simultaneously in several repair pathways (EMBO J. PMID: 16957781; MCB, PMID: 18809580). During my 4-years postdoctoral studies at CNIO, Madrid I chase my interests in disease and aging studying to a deeper knowledge the pathways controlled by telomeres and telomerase on tissue homeostasis and regeneration (Aging Cell, PMID: 21426483; Cell Reports, PMID: 23022483; Aging Cell, PMID: 23107558). In particular, I established a novel anti-aging gene therapy by incorporating telomerase on last-generation AAV9 viral vectors (Embo Mol Med, PMID: 22585399). These discoveries resulted in two patents supporting feasible anti-aging tools (EP14382311.0, EP10168341.5). During 2013 I moved to IMM-JLA, Lisbon where I got a 5-year competitive contract from FCT (FCT Investigator Program) where I score in the 1st position at the Medical Sciences panel. Here I`ve shown the potential use of lncRNAs in the reprogramming of aged cells (NatCommunications, PMID:29311544). During 2018 I moved to Aveiro as an Assistant Professor / Group Leader at the Department of Medical Sciences / iBiMED, UA, where I´m currently developing my career. Here, we are unravelling the properties of lncRNAs in cancer and ageing. In addition, we are studying the properties of stem cells that make them bona-fide models of cancer, supporting their role as reservoirs of cancer immunogens, and potentially supporting anti-cancer immunotherapies. We have published works on the biology of stem cells and in the role of lncRNAs in cancer and aging (Aging Cell, PMID:30456884; NatCommunications, PMID: 36114205; MTNA, PMID: 37680988). My track record and trajectory demonstrate an accumulated experience and maturity under diverse settings. During 2014, 2017, 2020 and 2022 I received strategic grants from FCT totaling more than 1,1M euros (as Pi and Co-Pi). Additionally, as coordinator of IBIMED I´m directly responsible for a team of 5 technicians, 1 junior and 1 assistant researcher, and for managing the 1.35M € budget of our research unit.
