Paulo Sousa is a Junior Researcher in the Microelectromechanical Systems Research Unit - CMEMS and LABBELS Associate Laboratory, at University of Minho. He is graduated in Biotechnology Engineering with master's in Micro/Nano Technologies. In April 2017, he finished his PhD degree in Biomedical Engineering at University of Minho, with the theme: "Thin-film sensor array for pressure measurement in the gastrointestinal tract". In 2021, he was awarded with an Junior Researcher Contract - Stimulus of Scientific Employment, Individual Support (CEECIND), reference 2021.01086.CEECIND - 4th Edition (2021), for 6 years, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). He was junior research at RTChip4Theranostics, developing temperature microsensors and heating systems for integration in OoC, at Microelectromechanical Systems Research Unit in University of Minho, which also participate in the Associate Laboratory in Biotechnology, Bioengineering and Electromechanical Systems-(LABBELS). From 2020 to 2021, he was postdoctoral research at ANI funded project: "PDMSmasks4ALL" PT2020-Co-development TR&D (POCI-01-02B7-FEDER-069844) involving a co-development with companies (OTOJAL) and R&I entities (CVR and IPB). From 2018 to 2020, he was Auxiliary Researcher in "NEXT-SEA project - Next generation monitoring of coastal ecosystems in a scenario of global change" (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000032) in University of Minho. During his scientific activities, he interacted with >60 co-authors in scientific publications. He published 20 papers in international peer reviewed journals (3 more submitted), 1 section book, 12 publications as proceedings of scientific meetings, having 447 citations and h-index: 8 (Scopus). He participated in 13 funded R&D projects, being Principal investigator at 1 of them: Organ-on-a-chip with integrated photoacoustic system: a preclinical platform for drug release monitoring DOI 10.54499/2022.02165.PTDC and co-principal investigator at EXPL/EMD-EMD/0650/2021; Brain-on-a-chip device integrated with biosensors: a preclinical platform for neurological diseases). He has 3 provisional Portuguese Patent submitted, 3 provisional International Patent submitted and 1 European Patent Application. Paulo Sousa supervise 8 MSc dissertations (6 of them finalized) and co-supervise 1 PhD. He was also guest-editor of two Special Issues related to Micro/Nano Devices: "Novel Technology and Applications of Micro/Nano Devices and System", Applied Sciences (ISSN 2076-3417, IF 2.474) and Special Issue related with "Advances and Challenges in Biofabrication and Organ-on-a-Chip Platforms", Micromachines (ISSN 2072-666X, IF 2.891). His main research areas are on biomedical microsystems, focused on lab-on-a-chip devices, microfluidics, microfabrication techniques, biosensors, immunosensors, micro-pressure sensors, optical detection and organ-on-a-chip.
