Silvia Raquel Silvia Monteiro

Silvia S. Monteiro (PhD 2014) is a researcher at the University of Aveiro. Her primary research interests include marine mammal ecology, the impact of human activities in marine ecosystems and marine conservation. She participates/participated in 15 national and international research projects funded by public and private entities, as a researcher, post-doc or collaborator, including EAAGrants SAFESEA "Sustainable local fisheries and promotion of a safe sea for cetaceans", FCT Cetsenti "Cetaceans as marine ecosystem health sentinels", LIFE MarPro "Conservation of marine protected species in Mainland Portugal", INTERREG Cephs and Chefs and FCT MicroPlasTox "Microplastics in the marine environment: estimation and assessment of their ecotoxicological effects". Currently, she is a team member of the recently approved project "Monitorização de cetáceos- Boto" (aerial dedicated survey for cetaceans monitoring). She has (co)authored 20 scientifc publications in peer-reviewed journals (12 in Q1 journals) and 1 book chapter. She has contributed to three legal documents that approved the definiton or enlargement of NATURA 2000 Sites of Community Importance in Portugal and respective management plans. She interacted with 63 collaborator(s) in co-authorship of scientific papers, of which 24 were international researchers. She has also (co)authored more than 40 conference communications. She has (co)supervised 3 postgraduate students. She has co-organized 6 international events. She is a member of the Working Group on Cephalopod Fisheries and Life History of The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (WGCEPHS-ICES) since 2019. She has a scientific background in field sampling techniques (stranding attendance, marine mammal observer in fishing and oceanographic boats, enquiries to fishermen), fisheries bycatch, toxicology (trace element, microplastics), habitat distribution models (GAM, Maxent, ARCGIS), molecular biology (mitochondrial DNA, microsatellites, MHC), foraging ecology (stomach contents, fatty acids, stable isotopes).
