Luís Margato is the coordinator of the Neutron Detectors Group in Laboratory of Instrumentation and Experimental Particle Physics (LIP) since 2013. For over a decade he his involved in detector R&D programmes in partnership with world leading detector groups from neutron facilities in Europe such as ILL-Institut Laue-Langevin (FR), ISIS-Neutron and Muon Source (UK) and TUM-FRMII - Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (DE). He collaborated in the EU-projects NMI3-FP6 and NMI3-FP7, where he worked with his colleagues from ILL, ISIS and FRMII in the development of detectors for SANS and reflectometry applications. He was the Portuguese coordinator of SINE2020 consortium funded by the H2020 Framework Programme, with a global budget of 12 M Euros. During this project Dr. Margato, introduced a novel RPC-based detection technology for position sensitive neutron detectors. Dr. Margato established collaboration with the European Spallation Source (ESS) detectors group, where solid neutron converters are being developed. Dr. Margato received the PhD in Physics from University of Coimbra in 2008 supervised by Prof. Francisco Fraga and Prof. Armando Policarpo. The main topic of his thesis was the optical readout of micropattern gaseous detectors (e.g. GEMs and MSGCs) for neutron and X-rays imaging, pioneering the Optical Readout of scintillation originated by Townsend electron avalanches in GEM like micropattern devices. In 2009 Dr. Margato joined the former group of A. Oed (MSGC inventor) at Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), led by Dr. Bruno Guerard, under a Post-Doc grant (FCT grant: SFRH/BPD/43978/2008). He studied the scintillation from MSGCs, when operated with a 3He-CF4 gas mixtures at high pressure. In 2010 he returns to LIP as a postdoctoral fellow. In the framework of NMI3-FP7 EU-project he worked on developing the Gaseous Scintillation Proportional Counter (GSPC) type detector, aiming at neutron reflectometry and time resolved small angle neutron scattering (SANS) applications. This GSPC detector for neutron imaging was introduced in LIP and was based on the main achievements of his PhD research. He played a major role in study the scintillation properties in MSGCs and GEMs operated with 3He/CF4 gas mixtures. He was in charge for the characterization of the secondary scintillation and the effect of gas impurities on the CF4 light emission. His results were crucial to establish the operating parameters of the detector that allowed to reaches a sub-millimeter spatial resolution ( 0.5 mm FWHM) a main objective of NMI3. Relevant results of his work are reported in about 30 scientific papers published in international peer-reviewed journals. Main results were also presented in more than 30 meetings of International collaborations and in conferences. Dr. Margato previously participated in 13 projects, 10 funded by FCT and 3 by EU Framework Programs (FP6, FP7 and H2020), having led two of the FCT projects.
