Licentiate degree in Environment Engineering (1994) and a PhD degree in Environment Applied Sciences (2002). Since 1999, Professor at the department of Environment and Planning of University of Aveiro, Portugal, and Associate Professor after 2017, in the field of Environmental Sciences and Engineering - Environment Technology. Development of course programs, course contents, teaching of several courses in Licenciate and Master in Environmental Engineering, Master in Sustainable Energy Systems, Master in Mechanical Engineering, Master in Chemical Engineering, Master Physical Engineering, PhD degree Science and Environmental Engineering, PhD in Energy Systems and Sustainability, PhD in Refining, Petrochemical and Chemical Engineering, PhD in biorefinery. Research activities in Environment Engineering and Science have been including the subjects of Energy and Environment, Biomass to energy, Energetic and material valorisation of solid wastes and process integration towards material and energy efficiency, Thermochemical conversion processes and technology (torrefaction, pyrolysis, gasification, combustion) of solid fuels (coal, biomass, solid wastes, sewage sludge), Fluidised bed reactor engineering, Technologies for monitoring, control and treatment of gaseous emissions, Solid waste management and treatment technologies, Management and valorisation of ashes from thermochemical conversion of biomass and wastes, Industrial Ecology, Natural resources management, Circular Economy, Hydrogen production and combustion. Member of the Executive Board, and Adjunct-Director for the Pedagogic Subjects and previously for Cooperation University-Society, at Department of Environment and Planning of University of Aveiro. Coordinator of the Research Group Resources Circularity Assessment and Technology (RCAT), at the Associate Laboratory Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) at University of Aveiro (http://www.cesam.ua.pt/tarelho). Has been Director and Vice-Director of degrees as Integrated Master in Environmental Engineering and Master in Sustainable Energy Systems, and has been involved in several management activities related to creation and evaluation of academic courses as Master and PhD programs at University of Aveiro. Has been supervising and co-supervising Pos-Doc, PhD, MSc, Licenciate students, and research fellows. Author and co-author of books, books chapters, articles in international journals, articles and communications in national and international conferences. Has been coordinator and member of the research team of several research (fundamental and applied) and development projects. Has high expertise in developing prototypes for bench-scale and pilot-scale demonstration facilities for study, development and optimization of thermochemical conversion (combustion, gasification, pyrolysis) processes/technology of biomass and wastes to energy and organic bioproducts, with most activities in collaboration with industrial companies.
