FILOMENA MARIA COELHO GUERRA DA FONSECA

Filomena Maria Coelho Guerra da Fonseca completed her Bachelor's degree in Biology at Lisbon University, Faculty of Sciences in 1987, and received her PhD in Mathematics and Biological Sciences from Rijksuniversiteit Groningen Faculteit voor Wiskunde en Natuurwetenschappen in 1996. She has been working as an Assistant Professor at the Universidade do Algarve (UAlg, Member of SEA-EU) since September 1987 and as a Researcher at the Centre for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA-UAlg) since 2009, leading the Molecular and Microbial Ecology lab (LEMM). She is currently a member of the CIMA-UAlg steering committee. She is involved in the steering committees of the MSc in Molecular and Microbial Biology and the Biology Degree courses at UAlg. She has taught courses in Plant Physiology, Developmental Biology, Molecular Genetics, and Molecular Genetics of Prokaryotes. Her research focuses on Molecular Virology, Molecular Microbial Biology, Molecular diagnostics, and Functional Genomics. She has published 30 articles in SCI journals, co-supervised 1 PhD thesis and supervised 11 MSc dissertations and 17 degree theses. She is currently involved as an Invited Scientist Fellow in 3 projects, was the Principal investigator in 4 projects, and a Team member (Researcher) in 8 projects. She has collaborated with 89 authors on scientific papers throughout her professional activities. Recently, she spent her sabbatical leave at the CSIC-ICMAN at the University of Cádiz, with a grant from Fundación Carolina, to study the effect of diets containing plant-derived nutrients on the intestinal microbiota and immune-related gene expression of seabass. She maintains a close work relationship with colleagues at UCA and ICMAN.
