Seila Díaz studied Marine Sciences (University of Vigo) and she obtained different internships scholarships in different laboratories during her university studies. Seila Díaz began her research work at Marine Research Center, CIMA, a regional government research to achieve sustainable management of marine resources. She developed her master's studies (DEA) with the diagnosis of bivalve mollusc pathologies mandatory for the declaration by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) through classical histopathological, cytological and transmission electron microscope techniques. Due to the detection of high mortalities associated with a cancer detected in cockles, she focused her professional career on this pathological alteration, studying how it affects the cockle at the individual and population level. During her doctoral thesis ( obtained maximum qualification with honours), she developed techniques such as Western Blot, Flow Cytometry, Cytogenetics, in-situ Hybridization, and q-pcr for the study of these cancers. She demonstrated the transmissibility of this cancer, its anomalies in ploidy, karyotypes and oncogenes, how it affects the bivalve population and the seasonal variation of its prevalence. Seila Díaz did his post doc at the University of Santiago de Compostela within the ERC Scuba Cancers project. This project studied the genetic causes that make a cancer transmissible and analyzed the mutation patterns to identify the mutational processes that causes these cancers to evolve. During this period, she broadened her skills away to genetics and genomics, learned as traditional Sanger-sequencing as well as NGS-sequencing (Illumina, Oxford nanopore, PacBio) and Bioinformatics data analyses. During this period, he has led three projects funded by the European Commission: Emerald-Neo, Ship-Neo, and GALLINA. Currently, she has joined the University of Aveiro through the grant HORIZON-MSCA-2021-PF-01 (99,4/100) to develop her Ship Clones project: Characterization and search for biomarker of marine transmissible cancers. Seila Díaz has supervised 1 PhD, 2 MSc, 3 BSc and 5 internship students. She has done short stays in University of Gdansk, National University of Ireland Galway, Université de Bretagne Occidentale, European Reference Laboratory for Mollusc Diseases at IFREMER La Tremblade, and Universidade de A Coruña. She has published 20 ISI & Scopus papers,1 book, 9 book chapters, and 40 communications at international meetings. She has actively participated in the outreach of her research to different audiences such as researchers, students, children, and the general public. In total, Seila Díaz has successfully secured over 235,000 euros in competitive funding, which includes grants for various projects, fellowships, and support for human resources.
