Rui A. P. Perdigão is chair professor (professor catedrático) in Physics of Complex Systems, founding chair professor of the Interuniversity Chair in Fluid Dynamical Systems, founding chief executive and professorial chair of the Interuniversity Institute for Intelligence, Complexity and Security (I3CS) and of the Meteoceanics Institute for Complex System Science (MICSS), where he also chairs the associated Doctoral School since its inception. There, he heads a large ecclectic set of international academic and research programs, including information physics, complexity and security, quantum and post-quantum technologies, all the way up to complex Earth and space system sciences and technologies. In 2020, Rui Perdigão was elected to the prestigious Academy of Sciences in Lisbon, joining the section of Physics. Moreover, Professor Perdigão heads the North Atlantic Climate Centre (NORA Climate) as Chair Professor in Climate System Dynamics. Among several other editorial appointments, Rui Perdigão serves as Editor in international scientific journals including the EGU journal Earth System Dynamics (ESD), is Section Editor-in-Chief at Climate and Associate Editor for Interdisciplinary Physics at Frontiers in Physics. His academic appointments include invited positions at the Institute of Telecommunications (IST Lisbon), the Institute of Social Sciences and CE3C from the University of Lisbon. Overall, Professor Perdigão promotes, leads and conducts fundamental research in information physics, coevolutionary complexity, and causality, ranging from quantum to cosmological scales passing through the intricacies of coevolutionary multi domain multiscale complexity across the geophysical and socio-environmental dynamics in the Earth system. His theoretical and methodological breakthroughs then come into down-to-Earth use in the development of advanced analytics, modelling and decision support frameworks for the institutions entrusted with the protection and security of our societies and theatres of operation across natural and technical environments. Since the inception of his professorial chair and institute, Professor Perdigão has introduced and been leading international MR Flagship programs nurturing large-scale high-risk high-impact projects, ranging from fundamental research in Mathematical Physics and Complexity to his pioneering QITES Constellation for Taking the Quantum Pulse to the Planet, and also the Synergistic Dynamics across the interdisciplinary interface among frontier natural, social and technical sciences, innovating from theory to practice to empower societies with frontier science. Empowering people with knowledgeable choices to make their own informed decisions in a complex coevolutionary world. This is further complemented with his direct connection to the industry, corporate world and broader society through his entrepreneurial activities as chief executive of Synergistic Manifolds.
