Eddy Domingues completed is undergraduate degree in Chemistry in 2006 at the University of Lisbon. After joining CICECO at the University of Aveiro on a Research fellowship, he completed his master degree in Materials Engineering in 2008. In his PhD research he was focused on the development and full characterization of composite perfluorosulfonated polymer proton exchange membranes (PEM), for application in intermediate temperatures Fuel Cells (T > 100 ºC) under poorly humidified conditions. He was also involved in the synthesis and structural, microstructural and electrochemical characterization of acid-functionalized periodic mesoporous organosilicas that were used as hybrid fillers in composite PEM. In 2014 he joined SECOP research group in Aveiro University to work in the optimization of the synthesis of layered double hydroxide thin films on Al alloy substrate for active corrosion protection, developing his nanostructured materials and electrochemical characterization expertise. In 2015 he joined KAUST in Saudi Arabia, where he was involved in the establishment of a new research group (Interfacial Lab, WDRC) assuming organizational and budgeting responsibilities. His research was focused on the study of the hydrophobic effect at the interface liquid/solid/vapour. He acquired valuable knowledge in micro and nano-fabrication using photolithographic techniques in the clean-room environment (standard lithographic processes, maskless/direct writing technique, dry and wet etching, ALD) and valuable knowledge on the chemistry and physics of water at the interface with solids, liquids and gases. He re-joined CICECO in late 2017, as a post-doctoral fellow, where he developed novel bio-based electrolyte materials with protonic or hydroxyl conduction, for application in Fuel Cells. At the moment, he holds Researcher Contract at TEMA / University of Aveiro, where he is developing graphene oxide-based materials for application in water remediation. He is proficient on the synthesis and characterization (XRD, TGA/DSC, N2 sorption isotherms, Solid State NMR, FTIR, DMA, mechanical and electrochemical properties) of ceramic, polymeric, metallic and hybrid materials, using different synthetic methods such as mechanosynthesis and sol-gel chemistry (also using microwave heat source). He is an experienced user of electrochemical characterization techniques, especially impedance spectroscopy for the study of conductivity and interface phenomena in ionic and mixed conductors. He is an independent and trained user of both SEM and TEM (Quanta 600, Quanta 3D and Quanta Nova Nano) and Confocal Microscopy (Zeiss LSM 710). At the moment, he has published 22 papers in national and international peer-reviewed journals, 14 of which in the last 5 years, and one patent (USA, published online). He also participated in several international conferences, presenting oral and poster presentations. He holds professional ties with several researchers at CICECO-University of Aveiro (Filipe Figueiredo, Paula Ferreira, Carmen Freire Barros, Paula Barbosa, Carla Vilela, Filipe Paz, Ricardo Mendes), TEMA-University of Aveiro (Gil Gonçalves, Paula Marques, Duncan Fagg) and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (Himanshu Mishra, Ahad Syed, Ulrich Buttner) In the many places Eddy had collaborated, he always takes the initiative and try to set the example, which makes him a natural leader, which is an essential feature for a successful career for any career in science. His scientific and engineering skills, in several fields of chemistry, material science and micro/nano fabrication allows him to be a great self-sufficient scientist and mentor, but also a great team member.
