Dora Brites was graduated in Pharmacy in 1976, received her PhD degree in Biochemistry in 1988 and habilitation in Biological Sciences in in 2004 from the Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), Portugal. She is a senior scientist and head of the Neuroinflammation, Signaling and Neuroregeneration (NeuroIn) laboratory at the Research Institute for Medicines of the Faculty of Pharmacy of ULisboa. Dora Brites was/is principal investigator of 18 funded national and international projects to investigate the spread of neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), together with the early priming in brain aging disorders. Dora Brites is an expert in neuronal and glial subtype categorization, exosome biology and miRNA modulation for regenerative technologies, using reliable 2D/3D disease models, including 'organ-on-a-ship' systems and patient-derived cells by reprogramming technologies. In recent work, the lab has been using astrocytes directly converted/reprogrammed from patient fibroblasts and iPSC-derived microglia, neurons, and astrocytes as disease models to explore the role of these cells in neuroinflammation and their regional pathological diversity. In terms of scientific contributions, she recently identified a set of inflammatory-associated miRNAs as determining glia polarization and neurodegeneration and that their regulation is key to halt AD and ALS disease progression. Her current research interests are focused on homeostatic imbalance and paracrine signaling dysregulation in AD and ALS, with the final goal of identifying new targets, early disease biomarkers and generating innovative therapies using bioreactors and miRNA-engineered exosomes for translational and personalized regenerative/reparative medicines. Dora Brites is author of more than 200 publications (h=48) that increased the current knowledge in neurodevelopmental and age-related disease mechanisms. Dora Brites received the Santa Casa prize in 2015 for developing an autologous exosome-based therapy to deliver neuroprotective cargoes in ALS and was the Nacional PI of the European Joint Programme for Neurodegenerative Diseases (JPND) for developing improved models for studying AD (2017-2020). Dora Brites has successfully supervised more than 30 Post-Doctoral researchers and PhD students and more than 50 master thesis. Dora Brites is Member of the Coordinating Board of RedeSAÚDE (ULisboa), Portuguese Glial Network, Coordinator Council and Executive Director of Mind-Brain College, Alzaforum Directory and Emeritus Investigator of the ULisboa.

  1. S100B as a potential biomarker and therapeutic target in multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis (MS) pathology is characterized by neuroinflammation and demyelination. Recently, the inflammatory molecule S100B was identified in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of MS patients. Although seen as an astrogliosis marker, lower/physiological levels of S100B are involved in oligodendrocyte differentiation/maturation. Nevertheless, increased S100B levels released upon injury ma. 2016. 21. Release of cytochrome C with the interaction of bilirubin, amyloid beta-peptide and glycochenodeoxycholate from isolated mitochondria.. The pathogenesis of cholestasis, bilirubin encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease appears to result from accumulation of diverse cytotoxic agents, which in turn may cause apoptotic cell death. In addition, mitochondria has lately been considered as a central executioner of programmed cell death, through the release of caspase activating factors. 22. Bilirubin directly disrupts membrane lipid polarity and fluidity, protein order, and redox status in rat mitochondria. Background/Aims: Unconjugated bilirubin (UCB) impairs crucial aspects of cell function and induces apoptosis in primary cultured neurones. In this study we used electron paramagnetic resonance and the spin labels 5-, 7-, 12-, and 16-doxyl-stearic acid (DSA) to evaluate the depth of the hydrocarbon chain at which interaction of bilirubin preferentially occurs. In addition, we used different pH values to determine the molecular species involved. Reseale. 2001. Brito, Maria Alexandra; Brondino, Carlos D.; Moura, José J. 29. Unusual case of severe cholestasis of pregnancy with early onset, improved by ursodeoxycholic acid administration. An exceptional case of early onset and prolonged postpartum course of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy is described. Contrary to other drugs tested, ursodeoxycholic acid administered after the 29th week of gestation improved pruritus and decreased bile acid leveis both in serum and amniotic fluid. Labour was induced at 36 weeks, and a female weighing 2.050 g and with an Apgar score of nine wa. 1998. Brites, Dora; Rodrigues, Cecília M.
