Francesca Coppola completed her PhD the last year (11/01/2022) in Biology and Ecology of Global Change at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. Currently, she is a first-level researcher for the project MicroNiche: Exploring the endolithic niche of coral symbiotic microalgae inside reef sand grains (PTDC/BIA-BMA/3039/2020 funded by FCT). Also, she is currently an Associate Professor, teaching the course CELLULAR BIOLOGY AND ZOOLOGY, at the University of Napoles Federico II, Italy at the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Production. Until 10/01/2023 she was a post-Doc of the research team of the FCT-funded project SLEEP-Shedding light on freshwater ecosystems under environmental change and pollution (PTDC/CTA-AMB/2518/2020), at the University of Aveiro. Her academic progress includes a Bachelor degree in General and Applied Biology (23/10/2013) at the University of Napoles Federico II, Italy and Master in Biological Science (18/12/2015) at the same university. During her PhD (2017-2022), she gained expertise in assessing the impacts caused by pollutants such as metals and pharmaceutical drugs in lagoons, estuaries and their inhabiting organisms. Moreover, for a better Ecological Risk Assessment, she focused on the effects of climate changes (CC) related factors in coastal ecosystems and aquatic biological resources. Her research work provided relevant data concerning the influence of CC-related factors that may not only affect the sensitivity of bivalves with high ecological, economic and cultural importance but also on the toxicity and bioavailability of pollutants. During this period, she acquired new knowledge that she considers important for research within environmental sciences and ecotoxicology: she has been applying genetic, biochemical, histological and physiological techniques to evaluate the effects of the metal(loid)s and drugs in invertebrate organisms; she identified and improved a group of biochemical biomarkers with the potential to be used as good early warning indicators of stress in invertebrates; she demonstrated that invertebrate species are crucial to help monitor ecosystem alterations induced by global change and by pollutants. Moreover, within a H2O value project (CENTRO-01-0145-FEDER-030513), she (together with colleagues) tested and performed innovative approaches aiming at reducing metal(loid)s from the water through nanotechnology. Along with her PhD workplan, she was also involved in the ASARISAFE (NSFC/0001/2016) project that gave her the opportunity to spend 3 months in the YSFRI (Qingdao-CN) to learn new biomarker techniques. She was also involved in the BISPECIAL (PTDC/CTA-AMB/28425/2017) and NIPOGES (MAR-01.03.02-FEAMP-0013) projects. Since 2017 she supervised and, helped in the laboratory with many foreign students on different projects (15 papers published). She attended many courses and seminary e.g. biomarkers, histopathology, CC, water remediation approach and pharmaceutical drugs. In conclusion, it is noteworthy that 80% of my 46 articles are the result of international collaborations, 92% are published in Q1 journals, and she has an h index of 21 and IF of 21.44 with 702 citations (without self-citations) of a total of 943 citations (WOS). Working in the world of ecotoxicology drives us to be active and dynamic but also teaches us to interact and adapt to different workplaces.
