Susana O. Catarino is an Assistant Researcher in the Microelectromechanical Systems Research Unit - CMEMS and LABBELS Associate Laboratory, at University of Minho, and, since 2016, a Visiting Assistant Professor at the same university. She finished the PhD in Biomedical Engineering in 2014 at the University of Minho, and the M.Sc. Degree in Biomedical Engineering (specialization in Medical Electronics) in 2009 by the same University. She was awarded, in 2020, with an Assistant Researcher Contract - Stimulus of Scientific Employment, Individual Support (CEECIND), reference 2020.00215.CEECIND - 3rd Edition, for 6 years, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT). During her scientific activities, she interacted with >80 co-authors in scientific publications. She published 42 papers in international peer reviewed journals (4 more submitted), 2 books as co-editor, 4 book chapters, >40 publications as proceedings of scientific meetings, having ~1000 citations and h-index: 13 (Scopus)/15 (Scholar). She has 3 patents, including 1 granted Portuguese Patent and 2 additionally submitted (1 US/EPO and 1 Portuguese) (1 more in preparation). She participated in 15 funded research projects, being Principal Investigator at 4 of them: (1) CardioOptical: Portable and non-invasive optical biosensor for cardiovascular diagnostics (competitive CEECIND 3rd edition FCT, 2021-2027); (2) Nanocarrier-based microfluidic strategies for characterization of Plasmodium falciparum-infected cells (International, funded by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, 2023-2024); (3) MalariaChip - Innovative non-invasive opto-acoustic microdevice for malaria diagnosis (National, funded by FCT, 2018-2022); (4) iProof20: "Device for automatic detection of malaria parasites", Promoted by TecMinho (Local, co-funded by Norte 2020 under the U. Norte Inova Project) (June - November 2017). She supervises 7 PhD and 19 MSc. students (13 of them finalized), as well as Erasmus students, research fellows and several undergraduate students under the projects she coordinates, promoting the training and engagement of young researchers. She organized 6 scientific events and has received 6 distinctions. She was invited as member of several scientific and program committees at international conferences and guest editor of 8 special issues at international peer-reviewed ISI journals. SO Catarino was an Eureka Eurostars Expert Evaluator at Cut-offs 10, 11 and 12, and is an evaluator for the Slovak Research and Development Agency, National Science Center from Poland (Funding scheme: SONATA BIS-11) and GWIS (USA) Fellowship Program. She is also an Ad Hoc journal reviewer at 20 international journals. SO Catarino has established international cooperation with researchers from Karolinska Institutet (Sweden), University of Strathclyde (UK), University of São Paulo (Brazil), Tohoku University (Japan), CISA (Angola) and International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory - INL, on the scope of her PhD supervisions and research projects. SO Catarino has >600 h of teaching experience at the Dept. Industrial Electronics, University of Minho, in the area of microtechnologies. Her main research area is Biomedical Engineering (with specialization in Medical Electronics), focusing on modeling, numerical simulation and development of optical and acoustic transducers for integration in microfluidic and lab-on-a-chip devices, for medical diagnostics.
