Falk Liebner has graduated in synthetic bioorganosilicon chemistry at Technical University of Dresden, Germany in 1993. He holds a position as Privatdozent of Biopolymer Material Chemistry at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna, Austria and an Invited Chair position at Aveiro University, Department of Chemistry and CICECO-Aveiro Institute of Materials. He is also key researcher at the Austrian Wood KPLUS - Competence Center for Wood Composites & Wood Chemistry. Falk Liebner published > 100 research paper in high-rank peer-review SCI journals, 15 book chapters, 25 non-SCI research paper, has > 200 published conference contributions and received several awards. He is member of the American Chemical Society, Executive Committee of the Cellulose and Renewable Materials Division, and of the German Chemical Society. He had invited guest professor stays at Kyoto University, Japan and SIGMA Clermont, France. Falk Liebner is lecturing across the entire curriculum from bachelor to PhD and is organizing public chemistry and science events. Falk Liebners research is particularly dedicated to the conversion of lignocellulosic resources into bio-inspired or bio-mimetic lightweight open-porous materials using the principles of green chemistry. Research of his Biopolymer Materials Chemistry Group includes the exploration of new derivatization and processing approaches aiming to preserve or modulate functions like biodegradability, biocompatibility, hydrophilicity, oleophilicity, to impart stimuli responsive capabilities or to create tailored morphologies and surface topologies. Since this requires an excellent understanding of structure-property-processibility relationships, fundamental research is an important part of his work, targeting for example elucidation of (supra)molecular ordering, self-assembly, gelation and coagulation of the biopolymers in/from solution state. These processes play an essential role for a wide range of properties for the materials of interest which are currently (anisotropic) gels, aerogels and carbon aerogels prepared therefrom. Among the wide range of potential applications for these materials, including for their precursor biobased gels, thermal superinsulation, energy storage, (bio)sensing, controlled drug release, and tissue engineering are major targets of our current research.
