awarded a FCT PhD grant to pursue her PhD in Biotechnology - “The potential of plants indigenous to Esteiro de Estarreja for heavy metal phytoremediation purposes” (2002-2007). The candidate has been involved in research activities since 2000, when she was a researcher at Technical University of Denmark working on the production of bioparticles for biofilm applications. Since 2002 she has been developing work at CBQF concerning the remediation of disturbed soils using plant-based technologies, with the application of biological tools (mycorrhizal fungi, plant growth promoting bacteria, endophytes, organic amendments, etc) and wastewater biological treatments. The candidate is thus experienced in the assembly and monitoring of microcosm experiments and sample processing, and published 1 thesis, 2 book chapters, 23 papers in international peer reviewed journals (9 of them in the last 5 years, resulting in a 5-year h index of 9 with a total of 147 citations). Ana Marques has also participated in several international meetings in the area of soil remediation, having presented 37 communications. The candidate was a team member in several funded projects related to the area, the most significant ones being PTDC/AGR-GPL/102861/2008-Improved productivity and iron nutrition in legume grains, POCI/AMB/60131/2004-The role of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi in Phytoremediation of Heavy Metal contaminated soils and POCI/AMB/60126/2004-Constructed wetlands for industrial wastewater treatment. Ana Marques was also participant in the FCT/5909/24/52013/S Transnational Cooperation Portugal-Morocco-Microbial and ecotoxicological characterization of soils and tailings from mining sites in South Morocco: phytoremediation assisted by microorganisms and more recently was team leader (PI) of the projects EXPL/AGR-PRO/0521/2013 - Efficient rhizospheric microorganisms: amelioration of saline stress in crops with economic significance and AAC n.º 02/SAICT/2017 Project n.º 28761 – Assessment of the energy production potential from phytoremediation derived biomass. The candidate also participated actively in the EC thematic networks EU COST 859-Phytotechnologies to promote sustainable land use management and improve food chain safety and EU and COST 837-Plant Biotechnology for the removal of organic pollutants and toxic metals from wastewaters and contaminated sites, furthering the international environment of her research. Since 2007 the candidate has also been dedicated to teaching in the Environmental Sciences area and is regular reviewer of 10 international journals. In 2011-2014 Ana Marques co-supervised a PhD student developing her thesis in the area of phytomanagement of mining soils. Since 2015 Ana Marques has been working in the area of the energy generation from phytoremediation derived biomass, namely through the production of oils, bioethanol and biodiesel from sunflower and maize used in the remediation of industrial and mining contaminated soils. The importance and quality of her work has also been recognized by the international scientific and entrepreneurial community as reflected in the following indicators: cited 620 times with an h-index of 14; awarded with the BES Innovation prize in the area of Biotechnology; two projects awarded by COTEC–Portuguese Business Association for Innovation.
