I graduated in Biology at the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCUL) in 1993 and completed a PhD in Ecology at UL in 1999. During my PhD, I studied nitrogen cycling in salt marsh ecosystems of the Tagus estuary. In 1999, I was awarded my first postdoc fellowship at the State University of New York (USA) in collaboration with Centro de Oceanografia, FCUL (CO) studying the use of photosynthetic pigments as biological and chemotaxonomical markers. At CO, I was responsible for establishing from scratch a HPLC technique dedicated to the separation, identification and quantification of chlorophylls and carotenoids. From 2002 to 2006, I had a break in my research career: I studied Cinema, concluded a 4-year degree at the Theatre and Film School, and worked as Director, Assistant Director, Camera Operator and Still Photographer. In 2006, I resumed research as a postdoc fellow and in 2008 I started a 5-year Researcher contract at CO. My work focused on understanding the response of algae to changing light environments, but also on the effects of environmental parameters such as temperature and inorganic carbon availability on photosynthesis. I further extended my expertise to the study of microalgae and chloroplasts as part of endosymbiotic associations with corals and photosynthetic sea slugs, respectively. In October 2014, following an 18-month parental break, I joined the Microenvironmental Ecology group of the University of Copenhagen led by Prof. Michael Kühl. This position allowed me to study photosynthesis and light-use efficiencies in natural and artificial biofilms of microalgae and cyanobacteria using state-of-the-art microsensors and imaging techniques. I established an on ongoing international network of collaboration with researchers in Denmark, France and Switzerland. In 2016, I returned to Portugal as a post-doc at University of Aveiro & CESAM to study photosynthesis in mixotrophic sea slugs, capable of retaining functional macroalgae chloroplasts. Recently, I obtained a Assistant Researcher position and started a research project as PI on Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture (CtLight - Effects of light on the photobiology and growth of the commercially valuable macroalga Codium tomentosum; budget €240.000). My h-index is 19 and I have published over 50 papers in peer-reviewed international journals with >100 citations/year since 2015.
