Maria de Fátima Tavares de Jesus has a PhD in Biology (specialization in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Biology) by the University of Aveiro (UA, Portugal). She has a long and vast experience in Ecotoxicology, having worked with a wide range of aquatic species and aquatic contaminants. She started her research in 2004, in the University of Porto, during her Msc studies. She addressed the effects of a wide variety of chemicals in the oxygen consumption of zebrafish, with the final aim of assessing its viability to be used as a early warning systems for water quality. Later, during her PhD, she focused on the effects of water chemistry parameters (hardness, alkalinity, pH, temperature), as well as metals, on Daphnia physiological endpoints. Her PhD was in the scope of a collaboration between the UA and Colorado School of Mines (CSM), which allowed her to be abroad and join the Chemistry Department of CSM and study the effects of dissolved organic carbon to Daphnia physiology. During this period she also gained experience with ecotoxicological assays with other aquatic model species (algae, Lemna sp.), exposed to chemicals (e.g. pharmaceuticals and pesticides) individually and in mixtures. Later, she dedicate to the study of the effects of nanoparticles to aquatic biota, having also acquired experience with nanoparticles characterization and enzymatic biomarkers. During her post-doctoral fellowship she developed ecotoxicological tests with other chemicals, namely ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents (DES) to aquatic biota. Currently, she is a junior researcher in the Department of Environment and Planning of the University of Aveiro and of the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies. Her work is focused on the toxic effects of wildfires to benthic species, mainly in chironomids, being integrated in a project which aims at modelling the toxic effects of fire-related complex contaminant mixtures on benthic aquatic species. She has participated in 4 research projects. She supervised 4 master students (as co-supervisor) and has participated in 3 master juries. She has more than 20 poster communications and 7 oral presentations, and is author of several original papers peer-reviewed in international scientific journals. In addition, she has been involved in the development of a device for organism counting which is patented in the United States (US20170322139A1).
