Joaquim Tinoco is a Civil Engineer since 2008, when he graduated at the University of Minho with highest qualification. He began his PhD studies in the Doctoral Program in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical field) at the same University in that year (2008), under the subject “Application of Data Mining Techniques to Jet Grouting Columns Design”, having conclude it in 2012. Since 2013 he has been working as Researcher at the Institute for Sustainability and Innovation in Structural Engineering (ISISE), with interests in the fields of: Geotechnical Engineering: Transportation Geotechnics, Soft Soils, Soil Improvement, Slopes Stability, Maritime Slopes, Scour Prediction and Behaviour, Sustainability, Circular Economy; Machine Learning; Artificial Intelligence (AI); Decision Support Systems; Neural Networks; Evolutionary Algorithms, Digital Image Processing, and Engineering Applications of the above. In 2013 he integrated the research team of SustIMS project, having work in the development of degradation models for rock and soil cutting slopes as well as retaining walls, following a Markov chain approach. Later, in 2014, he embraced a new project aiming the development of a decision support system for engineered slopes maintenance and repair, by combining soft computing algorithms and optimizations techniques, which involved the cooperation with Durham University as well as with Network Rail Company. In 2016 he integrated the organizing committee of the 3rd International Conference on Transportation Geotechnics (3rd ICTG 2016). Besides that, in the framework of the 3rd ICTG 2016, he led the creation of the Young Transportations Geotechnics Engineers (YTGE) network and was the Chairman of the 1st meeting of the Young Transportations Geotechnics Engineers. In 2019, he was member of the organizing committee of the 3rd International Conference on Information Technologies in Geo-Engineering (3rd ICITG 2019). Since 2020, he integrates the organizing committee of the 3rd International Conference of the International Society for Intelligent Construction (ISIC 2022), that will be hold in Guimarães in 2022. Also, in 2020 he was the responsible teacher of ”Slope Stability, Excavation and Retaining Structures“ course unit on STREMUM master’s degree course. At the same year he integrated the core researchers’ team of the newly created Infrastructure subgroup of ISISE research centre, where has been developed experience in the field of transportation geotechnics, with particular emphasis on railways. He is the Principal Investigator of two research projects financed by National funds (Ferrovia 4.0 and GIIP ) and two European projects (IN2TRACK3 and LIASON), which are related to the field of transportation infrastructures.. He is author of more than 60 indexed (e.g., ISI, Scopus) publications in international peer reviewed journals and international conferences, with a total of 916 Google Scholar citations (h-index of 15) and 590 Scopus citations (h-index of 14). He has also supervised 6 PhD thesis (5 of them ongoing) and 3 MSc Dissertation (one of them in the area of Transportation Geotechnics) and have been jury of academic degrees including Master and Doctoral. He is also member of national and international associations (e.g., CPGT, CPMT, PFP, IABSE TG5.2 Group, IABSE TG5.9 Group), as well as member of journal scientific committees. He has also edited two special issues in recognised international journals related to transportation geotechnics. Since 2023, He integrates the strategic council of the RalCoLAB (Collaborative Laboratory for the Modernization of the Railway System). Also since 2023, He is member (Secretary) of the TMOB-HUB (Transportation and Mobility Research Hub), a platform developed as a School of Engineering level, that associates the skills of researchers, R&D units, and interface institutes from the School of Engineering of the University of Minho.
