Tito Teixeira (TT) is a biochemist specializing in metabolism and nutrition to develop functional feeds for marine species. He is currently a Research Fellow in the NANO-AquaFeed project(2023.14508.PEX) at LAQV/REQUIMTE (University of Porto), where he works on the extraction, physicochemical characterization, and nanoencapsulation of marine-derived lipids and glucans, with a strong focus on their application in sustainable aquaculture. He completed both his Bachelor’s (2023) and Master’s (2025) degrees in Biochemistry at the University of Porto, developing his research activity at CIIMAR (Interdisciplinary Centre of Marine and Environmental Research). His work was focused on the development of functional feeds for marine species, integrating alternative and sustainable ingredients. In this context, he also participated in the InsectERA project, contributing to research on insect-derived ingredients for aquafeed applications. During his Master’s thesis, he investigated the metabolic and oxidative stress responses of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax) and gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) to dietary inclusion of insect-derived lipids, contributing to the understanding of novel feed formulations under stress conditions. TT expertise includes bioactive compound extraction, nanoencapsulation strategies, antioxidant activity and enzymatic assays, fish energetic metabolism studies, and the application of analytical and statistical tools (including R and SPSS) to assess biological responses. He also has hands-on experience in microscopy and molecular biology techniques, supporting a multidisciplinary approach at the interface of chemistry, biology, and aquaculture. He is certified to perform animal experimentation under Article 31º (2-a,c and d) of Decree-Law 113/2013, having completed the CAL-AQUA, Laboratory Aquatic Animal Science Course. His current work on algae-derived compounds and nano-enabled delivery systems has led to the preparation of a scientific manuscript under revision in peer-reviewed journal. Tito has actively disseminated his research at national and international conferences, including Aquaculture Europe, IJUP’2025, and the InsectERA Congress, and was awarded Best Poster at the Blue Think Conference 2025. He has also contributed to the tutoring of undergraduate and graduate students, demonstrating his ability to support collaborative research environments. He also participated in CIIMAR Open Day. His scientific profile is strongly aligned with the development of sustainable and scalable solutions for precision aquaculture, particularly through the integration of algae-derived bioactives and advanced nano-delivery systems. His work aims to contribute to more efficient, environmentally responsible, and industry-relevant aquaculture practices. Beyond research, Tito has been a scout for most of his life, taking part in community service initiatives such as Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro, Banco Alimentar, and Fundação Portuguesa de Cardiologia. He is currently completing the training required to become a Chief Scout.
