Following initial research activities after my Environmental Engineering MSc at UAVR, I decided to seek opportunities to do a PhD abroad to enrich my academic and personal formation. I found an outstanding opportunity, for being at one of the top European universities, WUR, and for being focused on identifying and testing nature-based solutions for an environmental engineering problem of greatest relevance for low-lying countries, i.e. land subsidence. Returning to Portugal at the end of my PhD, I was challenged to join the FIRE-C-BUDs (FCB) project, to become responsible for the coordination of the field team, operation of the field site (including flux tower and soil respiration (SR) network), and analysis of the eddy-covariance (EC) data. I accepted for representing a major opportunity to develop my supervision, scientific and technical skills, and because Portugal is among the European countries most affected by wildfires. I am proud that I was able to meet the FCB challenges. Not only has the flux site been producing high-quality EC and SR data since 2017, but also I learnt to process and analyse post-fire EC data, with indispensable tutoring by the renowned micro-meteorologist Prof. T. Foken. Adding to this, I gained experience in analysing post-fire SR data, and modelling SR using Remotely Sensed Vegetation Indices (RS-VI) during an OPTIMISE COST Action STSM at the MPI-BGC. After the official end of FCB (but continuing the main tasks), I was invited to apply the expertise and skills acquired during my PhD to assess the potential of the LIFE REFOREST geotubes and its mycotechnosoil to foster post-fire soil restoration. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, I challenged myself to elaborate a follow-up proposal to FCB. I directed the proposal towards the development of a global model to simulate post-fire Gross Primary Production and evapotranspiration based on RS-VI. To my contentment, my first research project proposal as PI - ModelEco - was selected for funding by FCT. Adding to this, in 2021 I won an individual contract in the highly competitive CEEC-FCT call to proudly position myself as an independent researcher in the field of ecosystem and soil fluxes, focusing on wildfire affected ecosystems.
