Vitor Francisco graduated in Chemistry from University of Coimbra in 2008 and completed a PhD degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) in 2014 where he contributed to the field of drug delivery using supramolecular chemistry. Since obtaining his PhD degree, he joined the group of Lino Ferreira, ERC and ERA Chair grantee, at Center for Innovative Biomedicine and Biotechnology with a post-doctoral fellowship and then as contracted researcher, where he is currently focusing on controlled delivery of drugs mainly for ageing-related diseases. V. Francisco has published 26 articles (1 under revision) in international peer-reviewed journals ranked in the highest quartile (Q1), h-index of 13 and i10 of 15, has 1 patent registered and 2 under preparation. He is Guest Associate Editor at Frontiers in Chemistry, Reviewing Editor at Experimental Results (Cambridge Uni. Press) and has been reviewer in various reputed journals such as Small, Chem Eur J, Nanoscale, among others. Over the years, V. Francisco has been integrated in the team of several research projects funded by European Commission, Gobierno de España (Agencia Estatal de Investigacion) and Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT). Moreover, V. Francisco has also participated in several national and international conferences often contributing with oral presentations (12 in total), including two invited lectures at AEICBAS Biomedical Congress and EMBE2022. In the last 5 years he secured, as Principal Investigator, 290k Eur (240 k in 2018 and 50k in 2022) from the national funding agency (FCT). In the project started in 2018 and finished in 2022, the aim was to develop a platform for the delivery of RNA-based therapies. The results of this project were published in medium/high impact journals such as Adv. Science (IF = 17.521), Angew Chemie (IF = 16.823) or Nanoscale Horizons (IF = 11.684) and one patent was granted. Since 2021, he is also Co-PI of another FCT project (50k Eur) for developing a gene editing nanoparticle formulation for retinal degeneration diseases. Alongside his research activities, V. Francisco has experience teaching at BSc level, "Biomedical Engineering", as well as "Regenerative Medicine" and "Advanced Therapies" courses at MSc and PhD level. Throughout the years he has mentoring/tutoring 8 graduated students, and he is currently supervising/co-supervising 3 Master student, 3 PhD students and a post-doctoral researcher. He was elected CIBB post-doctoral representatives (2016-2018), where he was involved in one evaluation of the host institution and also in the organization of a symposium for PhD students and Post-Doc researchers. V. Francisco has also contributed to several outreaching activities with the general public as well as high-school students, such as European Research Night or Science Fairs and participated in TV/radio shows as Mentes que Brilham (Porto Canal) and 90 segundos de Ciência (Antena 1).
