João Manuel Barbosa Meneses de Sequeira has pursued a comprehensive education and career in architecture and urban design. He attended the Lisbon School of Fine Arts for three years and then obtained a degree in Architecture from the Technical University of Lisbon. He further acquired a master's degree in urban design from ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon and completed his PhD in Urbanism and Architecture at ULHT Lusófona University in 2009. Since 1993, he has been engaged in academia, initially starting as a university professor. He served as an Associate Professor and Director of the Department of Architecture at the Lusophone University of Humanities and Technologies from 2009 to 2015. Later, he worked as an invited Professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) from 2017 to 2022, and in 2022, he took on roles as an assistant professor at UBI and a researcher for CHAIA at the University of Évora. His research work is affiliated with the Centre for Art History and Artistic Research (CHAIA) at the University of Évora, and includes projects funded by the MALAGUEIRA.PT (PTDC / ART-DAQ / 32111/2017) and IN2PAST (LA/P/0132/2020), focused on Heritage, Arts, Sustainability, and Territory. He has been part of the Public Art Information, Research, and Intervention Network (R3iAP) since 2023, and a researcher at the Arts Research unit (iA*) at the University of Beira Interior since 2024, where he coordinates the PArTE research line on Heritage, Art, Territory, and Ecology. In 2012, he co-founded the Architecture Research European Network Association (ARENA) and contributed significantly to the EAAE Charter on Architectural Research. He has been involved in ARENA’s projects such as "Radical Architecture Practice for Sustainability (RAPS)" since 2021 and "Design Research, Series on Method" (DR_SOM) since 2013. Additionally, he founded and led the FCT-funded Architecture and Art Laboratory research centre (LabART, UID / AUR / 04494/2019) from 2008 to 2019. He has served as an architecture expert for FCT, ERASMUS+ National Agency, and numerous international research funding organizations including the Research Foundation - Flanders (FWO), the Technology Foundation STW, the Royal Danish Academy (KADK), and the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS). João Manuel has produced a wide range of books, book chapters, scientific papers, and websites. His academic responsibilities have included supervising and evaluating numerous undergraduate theses, master's dissertations, and doctoral theses. He has organized scientific conferences and seminars, participated in scientific committees, and been involved in pedagogical and technological events and workshops. In 1992, he co-founded the AJLS (Atelier João e Luisa Sequeira) with Architect Luisa Paiva, which evolved into the LabART - Architecture, Urbanism, and Arts Lab. His team has undertaken diverse projects in Architecture, Urbanism, Design, Sculpture, and Music. He has participated in and been recognized in international architecture competitions focusing on sustainable and emergency architecture. He is affiliated with the Portuguese Association of Architects (OA - Ordem dos Arquitectos, membership number 4237) and the College of Urban Architects (CAU - Colégio dos Arquitectos Urbanistas, membership number 134), and his contributions to the field are recognized within the professional community.
