Sónia M. Rodrigues is an Assistant Professor at the Department of of Environment and Planning & CESAM (Universidade de Aveiro (UA), Portugal). She was an Assistant Researcher in 2014-2019, and was awarded a “Starting Grant” (IF/01637/2013) by the Portuguese FCT IF Programme. Born in 1978, S.M. Rodrigues graduated in Environmental Engineering in 2001, obtained a MSc in Environmental Management and Policy (2005) and a PhD in Environmental Applied Sciences (2010) from UA. She was a Post-Doc (UA & Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands) in 2011-2013, and a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University, USA (Oct 2015-April 2016). In 2016-2021, she was the PI of the LIFE No_Waste Project on the recovery of degraded mining soils in Portugal, a finalist for the LIFE Awards 2022 (LIFE14 ENV/PT/000369, URL: lifenowaste.pt; https://www.lifeawards.eu/project/life-no_waste/); and the PI of two FCT funded projects_ AGRITARGET (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-02925); and NanoFertil (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-016749/ PTDC/AGR-PRO/6262/2014) adding up to ~ 2M euros of funding to UA. She is/ was member of the team of other 15 national and international projects. She works in the area of Natural sciences with emphasis on Earth and Environmental Sciences. She is an expert in environmental chemistry with focus on soil quality and soil functions; reactivity and bioavailability of metals and metallic nanoparticles in soils; assessment of pollution risks to animal and human health in terrestrial environments; co-valorization of biomass ash and biological sludge in the recovery of degraded soils; development of materials for controlled release of soil fertilizers and plant protection products; and environmental implications of nanotechnology in terrestrial environments. She developed a comprehensive understanding of the fate and effects of agriculturally relevant nanomaterials in complex terrestrial agri-food systems. Her research approach has contributed not only to novel findings within her laboratory, but also to move the research field in new directions. In 2006-2023, she published 65 papers (Sum of times cited: 2925, h-index of 31) in peer-reviewed WoS journals, presented >80 poster/ oral communications at international conferences, 11 Reports and 3 Book Chapters (on Human Health Risks and Soil Pollution). Several of her papers were published in major scientific journals including TrAC - Trends in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Science & Technology, Environment International, Environmental Pollution and Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta. She interacted with >90 co-authors in her publications. Since 2018, she is the coordinator of the CESAM’s Research Group “Biogeochemical Processes and Pollutants” (with 14 PhD-degree holders). She was co-PI of CESAM’s Thematic Line “Environmental Biology & Health” (2017-2018). She currently supervises/ co-supervises 4 PhD students and 3 Master students. She supervised 4 MSc and 6 under-graduate students. Along with her PhD students, her current research team includes 2 Pos-Docs and 3 Research Assistants (MSc). She received an award for Best Contribution (Oral Communication) in 2011 an award for Best Student Poster at Goldschmidt™, 2009. She co-organized a session on “11fO1 - Biota and geochemical cycles: mechanisms of transformation, uptake, and translocation of metal and metalloid species in the critical zone” in Goldschmidt2021; a symposium on “Nanomaterials: Applications and impacts” at ICOBTE2017; and and was member of the Organizing Committee of ISEG (International Symposium in Environmental Geochemistry) in 2012.
