Lino Ferreira (LF) is an Investigator Coordinator (equivalent to Full Professor) at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, and a senior researcher at the Associate Laboratory Center for Innovation in Biomedicine and Biotechnology (CIBB) at the same University. His academic background combines biomaterials and stem cell biology, providing a strong interdisciplinary foundation for research at the interface of ageing and regenerative medicine. Throughout his career, he has developed and led innovative research programs focused on human in vitro disease models, extracellular vesicles, nano- and biomaterial-based therapeutic platforms, and mechanisms of ageing and regeneration. Since the beginning of his career he gathered more than 17500 citations by peers, endowing him an h-index of 66. LF is the inventor of more than 25 international patents, 10 of which have been licensed to companies. LF was also involved in the design of the first researcher-driven clinical trial with human cells in Portugal. Beyond research, LF has a strong record of leadership and service to the scientific community. He served as President of the Portuguese Society of Stem Cells and Cell Therapies (2013–2015) and currently holds governance roles within several entities at the University of Coimbra, including membership on the Board of the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC) and the Board of CIBB. He served as a member of the Scientific Councils of the Organic Unit 3Is (2020-2023) and the Faculty of Medicine (2019-2023). Since 2021, he is the coordinator of the collaborative laboratory called Colab4Ageing that joins several stakeholders in the chain value, to develop, test and implement innovative products and services in the area of ageing. Since 2019 until now, he is associate editor of the journal Biomaterials Science. He has been actively involved since their inception in two scientific societies: the Portuguese Society of Stem Cells and Cell-Based Therapies and the Portuguese Network on Extracellular Vesicles. He is actively involved in graduate and postgraduate teaching, contributing to courses and supervision in biomedical sciences, regenerative medicine, and advanced therapies. LF has been the primary supervisor of 20 postdoctoral researchers, six of whom have obtained principal investigator (PI) positions. He has also served as the primary supervisor of 24 PhD students and co-supervisor of 7 additional PhD students, all of whom successfully defended their theses. In addition, LF has been the primary supervisor or co-supervisor of 24 MSc students who successfully defended their theses. Members of LF’s research group have founded several companies (e.g., Matera, Curemat, Tissium, Exogenus Therapeutics, and DoDoc), collectively attracting more than €150 million in venture capital. LF has secured substantial competitive funding at national and international levels. In the last 10 years, he attracted more than 15 million euros of competitive funding including 1 ERA Chair project, 1 Twinning project, 1 Marie Curie ITN project, 5 Marie Curie International fellowships, 2 pathfinder open projects, 5 Horizon European projects, as well as several FCT and industry projects. In the last 5 years, he has: (i) published more than 65 articles in international peer-reviewed journals, (ii) disseminated his work in more than 50 international conferences and (iii) acted as co-chair of 6 symposia in high profile conferences (TERMIS, ESB, ESCI). He was the recipient of several awards/prizes including the Portuguese Society of Stem Cell Therapies (2022), Bluepharma innovation (2016), FCT Investigation (2013 and 2015) and the Crioestaminal prizes (2008).
