Clara Grosso (0000-0002-2457-8267 (ORCID), B-9813-2013 (ResearchID), 25627935200 (Scopus ID)) has a degree in Plant Biology by the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon (FCUL, 2004) and a PhD degree in Biotechnology from the School of Engineering, Technical University of Lisbon (2010) (formerly IST-UTL, currently University of Lisbon). From February 2010 to December 2014, she was a Post-Doc researcher at the Associated Laboratory REQUIMTE/Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto (FFUP) and at the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology, Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, University of Copenhagen (UCPH). From January 2015 until December 2019 she was an assistant researcher at REQUIMTE/ LAQV. In 2016, she moved from FFUP to Grupo de Reação e Análises Químicas (GRAQ)/ Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), also member of REQUIMTE/LAQV. Her field of research focuses on natural products from plants and seaweeds, regarding aspects like extraction optimization using green extraction methodologies, identification of secondary metabolites and assessment of in vitro bioactivities with emphasis on oxidative stress and enzymes related to Alzheimer's disease and depression. Her main interest is to discover new neuroprotective drugs, more efficient and with fewer adverse effects, taking into account issues like drugs bioavailability and the ability of drugs to cross the blood-brain barrier. At UCPH she gave the first steps in the research field of compounds with antidepressant activity and in 2016 she spent a short period at the University of Milano-Bicocca (Unimib) learning techniques of nanoencapsulation of natural products. In 2017 she attended the Course "Laboratory Animals Sciences - Aquatic Organisms", category B (FELASA) in order to be allowed to develop in vivo assays. Since 2015, she has been the principal investigator of four projects/grants: "Sea_4_Brain_Food: Green extraction of marine neuroprotective compounds targeting functional foods for silver generation", funded by REQUIMTE (1 year), "Flavonoids for Brain Disorders: Engineering Polymeric Nanoparticles to Improve Drug Delivery", funded by FCT (IF/ 01332/2014/CP1255/CT0001, 5 years), "SilverBrain - From sea to brain: Green neuroprotective extracts for nanoencapsulation and functional food production", funded by FEDER and FCT (PTDC/OCE-ETA/30240/2017, 3 years) and "#MINDtheMOOD: Exploring NMDA receptors for discovering new fast-acting antidepressants for Treatment-resistant depression" funded by FCT (CEECIND/03436/2020). She is also the responsible investigator of the REQUIMTE team in the CYTED project GEnoPsySEn - Development of genosensors for pharmacogenomic targets in the central nervous system (2023-2026, Rede 223RT0141). Since 2012, she has supervised undergraduate students at FFUP, ISEP, Escola Superior de Saúde (ESS-IPP), and at the University of Minho (UMinho)/Portugal, 9 MSc theses (plus 3 ongoing) and she is currently supervising a PhD student. She authored 63 articles in refereed journals and 9 book chapters. Additionally, she edited a book published by Springer, entitled "Herbal Medicine in Depression: Traditional Medicine to Innovative Drug Delivery" (2016). She is also a member of the editorial board of Current Medicinal Chemistry (Bentham) and Processes (MDPI) and was guest editor for Foods (MDPI, 2021), and Processes (MDPI, 2021, 2022-2023). She has been an evaluator of Latvia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Argentina and H2020 projects. She is appointed reviewer for more than 40 international scientific journals in the areas of natural products, nanomedicine and neurosciences. She is a member of the Portuguese Society of Biologists, the Portuguese Society of Chemistry, the International Society for Ethnopharmacology, the American Society of Pharmacognosy and the Society of Medicinal Plant and Natural Product Research.
