Paulo Almeida graduated in Applied Chemistry - Organic Chemistry in 1987 by University of Nova de Lisboa, Portugal and in 1991 completed his PhD in Chemistry - Organic Chemistry by Universidade Nova de Lisboa. In 2008, obtained his Habilitian Title in Chemistry by the University of Beira Interior (UBI), Portugal. From 1985 to 1987 during his graduated course was a monitor at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology - University of Nova de Lisboa. From 1992 started his academic and research activities in the Faculty of Sciences - UBI as Assistant Professor (1992-2000), Associated Professor (2000-2009) and as full professor since 2009. From 2010 became an integrated member of Health Sciences Research Centre of UBI (CICS - UBI) where he was the coordinator of BBS - Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences of this Research Centre (2015-2017) and the coordinator of BCDR - Biomedicinal Chemistry and Drug Research group (2021). From 2009 to 2013 was vice-rector for Education and Internationalization of UBI. Since November 2017, is the Dean of the Faculty of Sciences - UBI. Paulo Almeida published 106 douments (Scopus database) including 94 articles, 6 reviews, 4 book chapters and 1 Editorial. In this database, Paulo Almeida has 1560 citations by 1037 documents, 148 co-authors an h-index of 23. He is author of 2 national patents, Paulo Almeida participated as a team member in 11 research projects, 4 of them as responsible member of the participating institution and 2 of them as principal researcher. The pedagogical capacity of Paulo Almeida is supported by recurrent teaching activities of mainly organic and medicinal chemistry at UBI. Moreover Paulo Almeida completed the supervision of 3 post-doctoral researchers, 5 PhD thesis and actually supervised 1 PhD. Additional, supervised 11 MSc dissertations and co-supervised 8. Works in the area of Medical and Health Sciences with emphasis on Basic Medicine /Medicinal Chemistry, His scientific research is mainly focus on the synthesis/organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry areas, with a special interest in the development of new drugs with biologic activity as photosensitizes for photodynamic therapy (PDT), antiproliferative, antioxidant and antimicrobial, and as inhibitors of enzimes such as xanthine oxidase, 5a-redutase, monocarboxylate transporter 4, CD-36 and cyclooxygenase-2.
